The first teaser for A Minecraft Movie left many fans doubting the highly-anticipated movie’s potential, and it seems like the latest official video featuring exclusive insights from the developers hasn’t helped them get off the fence.
The Minecraft community heavily criticized the heavy usage of CGI and predictable dialogue shown in the first teaser. Now, the newly revealed designs for in-game mobs like skeletons and zombies in the movie have stirred concern.
u/Thegoodgamer32 called the zombies and skeletons in A Minecraft Movie cursed through a post on the r/Minecraft subreddit:
You thought the movie couldn’t get any more cursed? Yeah you were wrong.

The post has not only bagged around 10,000 upvotes in less than 24 hours, but has also sparked a debate among the subreddit’s members. For starters, the skeleton holding a sword instead of the bow and arrow that it usually carries in the game has not sat well with many.
In Minecraft, skeletons rarely pick up swords and armor as loot after killing other players or mobs. While that could explain the skeleton holding the sword in the video, it is still a bone of contention.
Some Reddit users also claimed the zombie looks like a person wearing a carton box as a mask which is its most basic representation in pop culture. A popular demand was to have Jack Black play the zombie as well, as zombies and Steve share the same outfit in the game.
It is worth noting that A Minecraft Movie has a star-studded cast including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Emma Myers, among others. While this is great for marketing, a lot of people are skeptical if it would make sense to put real-life actors in a pixelated world. This faction of fans wants the entire movie to be animated.

Having said that, plenty of fans find A Minecraft Movie promising and they’re content with everything teased so far. If there are no unexpected delays, you can expect to watch it in theatres on April 4, 2025.
