Leagues in Path of Exile 2 are the different modes that you get to access while the game is currently in early access.
Although these leagues are usually used whenever there’s a new season, for now, the league that everyone is being placed in is the early access league while making a new character. But there’s a bit more to this than just the timing.
So, here’s everything you need to know about leagues in Path of Exile 2.
How many leagues are there in Path of Exile 2?
As of now, there are only two leagues that you will come across in Path of Exile 2, namely the Standard league and Hardcore league.
These two leagues set the difficulty that you will experience in the game. While the Standard league will give you access to almost every single mechanic in the game, the Hardcore league comes with a few limitations:
- You cannot play with other players or join a party. This mode is better known as “solo self found” mode.
- You can’t trade items online with other players.
- You can’t access your stash from Standard league characters.

However, it’s worth noting that unlike Diablo 4 where death in the Hardcore mode means permadeath, in Path of Exile 2, death in Hardcore leagues will transfer your character to Standard leagues.
Can you switch leagues in Path of Exile 2?
No, you cannot switch leagues in Path of Exile 2. Once you’ve made a choice during character creation, you won’t be able to change it manually anymore.
However, if your character dies in the Hardcore league, it’ll automatically be transferred to the Standard league.
This is all that the league functionality offers in the game for now. However, if we’re to draw references from its predecessor, then leagues will definitely be expanded upon in Path of Exile 2, once the game comes out of early access and into full release.
