The recently unveiled Minecraft Live 2025 event brought with it quite a few exciting additions, including the Vibrant Visuals, Spring Drop and more – as well as the new NPC known as the ghast.
They come in 3 different variants – dried ghasts, ghastlings as well as happy ghasts, and are expected to become a key NPC of sorts in the game. More on these ghasts and their variants in the section below.
All ghasts in Minecraft, explained

Dried Ghast
As the name suggests, this is a dried up version of a ghast, located within the Nether. It resembles a dark, gray block of sorts that can be easily broken using a tool or simply with your bare hands. It can also be crafted using ghast tears and a bone block.
Ghastlings
Ghastlings are the newborn spawn of ghasts, directly obtained by submerging a dried ghast block in water. Once spawned, they resemble a (rather sleepy) ghost of sorts, featuring a set of adorable legs below a white block.
Once spawned, ghastlings will follow the player throughout their travels across the in-game world of Minecraft. They are also quite fond of snowballs, and feeding them enough of those will let you transform one into a happy ghast.
Happy Ghast
The happy ghast is formed when you feed a set amount of snowballs to a ghastling. This adult version of the ghastling resembles a cute white, adult block with a pair of intriguing goggles to go along with it,
The happy ghast can be fitted with a harness of sorts, which can in turn be crafted using the following items:
- Leather
- Glass
- Wool
To equip it on the happy ghast, simply walk up to it with the harness and interact with it to equip it on them. Once ready, the happy ghast can now follow players all across the overworld – and even help them access certain hard to reach areas bound by verticality. Interestingly, it is also one of the best ways to transport materials within Minecraft.
