10 Best Easter Eggs Found in Video Games

Video Games are filled with easter eggs and have had them since the birth of the media. If we sat down to list all of them, then we might as well name every video game in existence.

Unfortunately, we are not going to do anything like that. Instead, here’s a list of some easter eggs one can find in video games that we think are best.

Top Easter Eggs Found in Video Games

Hideo Kojima in Cyberpunk 2077

Hideo Kojima is pretty much the king of easter eggs these days. But there have been times when he himself appeared as an easter egg in other media. The most notable one, which we want to talk about, is his appearance in Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was released in 2020 to critical reviews, but made a comeback over the subsequent years. It is developed by the Polish-based company CD Projekt Red, who are known for the Witcher franchise.

This easter egg can be very easy to miss in the video game. Mr. Kojima can be found in the game’s mission titled ‘The Heist’. He will be sitting in a corner, and once you see him, he will be hard to miss.

Now to reverse the tables, and talk about easter eggs in Hideo Kojima’s own game. Death Stranding was released in 2019, and was highly praised for being a technological marvel. It also further helped strengthen the bond between the film and gaming industry.

The game is ripe with star power and cameos from people one would recognize even if they don’t play Video games. Kojima doubled down on this aspect for the second game, which was just released in 2025.

In Death Stranding 2, Hideo Kojima put one of his favorite people, Usada Pekora, as an easter egg in the game. Usada Pekora is a famous VTuber from the hololive group and has made several appearances with Hideo Kojima in other places.

Minds were bent by Hideo Kojima’s game on the PlayStation 1 after he introduced a boss who broke the fourth wall. Psycho Mantis is a creepy boss with supernatural abilities, who can tinker around with your PlayStation’s hardware.

The boss would start messing with the player’s mind, talking to them about altering the memory card. Psycho Mantis would also start talking about the games that the players were playing on their console.

Dog Ending from The Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 is considered one of the best horror games of all time. Created by developers at Konami when the company was praised for its catalogue of games. But did you know that the game also had one of the craziest easter eggs as an ending?

The franchise was originally born in 1999 with the first game on the first PlayStation. The series is widely considered as an impressive horror game at depicting psychological horror. The second game took it to newer heights with its narrative.

Silent Hill 2’s serious storytelling tracks the fate of James Sunderland as he visits the town called Silent Hill. It eventually ends up being a much darker tale than players anticipate. But one particular non-canonical ending of the game ruins it all.

It is finally revealed that a Shiba Inu dog was behind all the events of the game. It was pulling strings, controlling James’ fate from a secret control room.

Batman Arkham Asylum’s teaser for the next game

The Batman Arkham series of games is probably one of the best superhero games, right next to PlayStation’s Spider-Man titles. The first game, Batman Arkham Asylum, standardized what a Batman video game should be like.

People guessed that it was only after the critical acclaim of the first game that the next game was greenlit. But Arkham Asylum actually has a secret that directly reveals the next game, in the form of a cool easter egg.

Minecraft is possibly one of the most played and famous video games in the modern day and age. It even got its own live-action movie, which set its own records. But we aren’t here to talk about Minecraft, but rather an easter egg from the title that appears in another game.

Borderlands 2 was the follow-up to the successful narrative-based first-person shooter created by Gearbox Software. The franchise has become a cult classic of its own and has its fair share of incredible easter eggs.

In the game’s Caustic Caverns, players can venture into a familiar voxel art world. Over there, the player can find the famous creepers from Minecraft. This is one of the best Minecraft easter eggs one can come across.

John Romero’s head in Doom 2

When talking about games that revolutionized the industry, one cannot miss out on Doom. The game heavily influenced the first-person shooter genre. It became one of the games responsible for the creation of the Video Game regulation and Rating Board.

One of the main minds spearheading the creation of the game series was John Romero. But he didn’t just create the franchise; he also put himself in the second game.

In Doom 2, while in the Icon of Sin’s lair, an interesting easter egg can be found. John Romero’s head can be found behind the game’s assets. One of the coolest and earliest easter eggs in a video game.

This one is not an uncommon easter egg as a lot of people will definitely come across it. Ciri is a character from CD Projekt Red’s Witcher franchise. She was an apprentice witcher who is known to have powers that allowed her to travel to different worlds.

This dimension-hopping ability is the main point of our easter egg. CD Projekt Red had teased their next grand Cyberpunk RPG years before it released. Even though it came late, the developers made sure to connect the world with Witcher’s through an easter egg.

During a certain cutscene in the game, Ciri references Cyberpunk 2077. She talks about visiting a world where people wear metal on their heads and also references guns.

A Giant Beating Heart in Grand Theft Auto 4

This is arguably one of the creepiest easter eggs ever found in a video game. The Grand Theft Auto franchise, just like Minecraft, is one of the most famous video game franchises.

While all of the games have their fair share of easter eggs, we believe the one in GTA 4 far surpasses all of them in surprise and shock value.

Grand Theft Auto was released by Rockstar Games in 2004. The title took players away from San Andreas and went back to Liberty City.

In this iconic city, if the players took a helicopter up to the Statue of Happiness, they might come across a horrifying sight. A giant beating heart pinned with chains, which is a sight one would not expect to see in a game like this.

Giant Squid in Assassin’s Creed II

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has been the center of criticism in recent times. But there was once a time when the video game series was winning awards and being highly praised. One of the games from that era of the franchise has an interesting easter egg.

In Assassin’s Creed II, while in the Santa Maria della Visitazione level, players have to navigate through caverns. It is at this time that one may come across a giant squid that suddenly shows itself.

What makes this easter egg special is that at that point in time, Assassin’s Creed to people was mostly sci-fi and historical. So, to come across a fantasy monster like that was unexpected.

Modern Assassin’s Creed games made supernatural and fantasy elements a more common affair. This led to the franchise losing a lot of its charm, making the easter egg trivial.
