From Hunter to Captive: Experiencing Hornet’s journey through Pharloom

Hollow Knight Silksong lets you play as a character who was once a rival. Introduced as a fast, skilled, and honourable warrior, Hornet was a boss in Hollow Knight. The knight’s sibling and a princess, Hornet, was one of the most memorable characters from the previous game.

Hornet showed all signs of a great warrior and sibling by helping and testing the Knight. Wielding a needle, she was a dangerous, elegant, and untouchable hunter of Hallownest.

But now in Hollow Knight Silksong, she’s not half of what she was before. Captured and lost in an unknown place called Pharloom. Starting from scratch and regaining her strength by step, you make your way to the top to unravel the mysteries of Pharloom.

Here’s how Hornet, once an impeccable hunter, survives alone in this strange new kingdom.

The fall of Hallownest’s guardian

After a strange phenomenon saves Hornet by dropping her cage down a pit, she wakes up in a strange place. Fighting her way through bugs unknown to her, she makes her way to some residents of this place.

There, Hornet finds out that the place she’s in is called Pharloom and that her captors were from the citadel. Stripped of her strengths and skills, Hornet plans to make her way to the Citadel while regaining her strength on the way.

Pharloom- A kingdom of Silk and song

Unlike Hallownest, which was the victim of decay and disease. Hollow Knight Silksong’s Pharloom is a kingdom that is filled with strange signs of life. Threads of silk throughout the place, and haunting music in every corner you visit.

With tall towers and life brimming everywhere, Pharloom is quite beautiful. But behind this beauty lie dangerous enemies, traps, and a terrain that’ll surprise you in lots of different ways, haunt this kingdom.

Some enemies are supposed to be normal bugs called pilgrims who are attempting the climb towards the summit. But under the influence of silk, they turn hostile and lose control over themselves.

The mysteries of this kingdom

Hollow Knight Silksong’s narrative thrives on the mystery surrounding the kingdom and Hornet’s capture. Why was she captured? Why bring her here all the way from Hallownest? Who is at the top of Pharloom? These questions drive the narrative forward.

Later in the game, Hornet finds Bellhart, a place whose inhabitants are under the control of silk. You can free the bugs of this town from their bindings by defeating the Silksong widow.

Hornet deduces that her ability to produce her own silk could be the reason the veiled bugs captured her. On her journey, she meets weavers, beings connected to both Pharloom and Hallownest.

Hornet turns out to be a half-weaver herself, which proves her connection to silk and how the silk threads are tied to her fate.

Gaining entry to the Citadel

Getting stronger and piercing her needle through all kinds of foes, Hornet makes her way forward. She also makes new friends on the way, and these friends assist her in different ways. And just like its prequel, Hollow Knight Silksong also has a character for skill checks.

In the deep docks, you meet Lace. Lace’s only goal is to stop Hornet from reaching the top of the citadel. Just like Hornet in the previous game, you have to fight Lace twice in Silksong. The last battle occurs just before the entrance of the citadel.

Becoming the hunter again

Till the end of the game, Hornet keeps improving herself. Acquiring all kinds of different tools to attack enemies with or for a special ability. Upgrading her signature weapon needle, increasing health, and silk capacity.

The journey that starts with Hornet having nothing ends with her having an arsenal of tools and charms. This makes her the hunter she used to be once again after her long and unfortunate capture.

Why does Hornet’s story have a great moral?

Stripped of everything she had. From her skills to tools, everything is gone. The start of Hollow Knight Silksong was Hornet starting her journey towards being a hunter from zero once again. With just her mastery over her weapon, she manages to make her way forward.

The world basically knocked her down to the ground, and instead of giving up, Hornet stood up. She fought any foe that blocked her way and acquired everything that was once hers again. With nothing but sheer will and hard work.

Life humbled her, but despite this humbling, she rises again. Not as a princess of Hallownest or as a captive of Pharloom, but as Hornet, the maker of her own path.
