Tools are objects that will allow Hornet to have a much easier time completing some of the harder content that Hollow Knight Silksong has to offer. These trinkets provide buffs and modifiers to the character while activating certain key abilities that you need for your run, especially when taking on the different bosses.

There is are variety of tools in Soilksong, each color-coded to fall under a particular category. So if you are looking to make the most of these items in the game, then the guide below will help you out.

How to use Tools in Hollow Knight Silksong

Equipping Tools in Hollow Knight Silksong

Once you get your hand on a tool you will like to use, you will then need to open the menu, and then switch to the Crest tab. Here, scroll through all of the tools that you have available and then pick the one that you would like to use.

You can switch between the tools that you acquire and experiment with the different buffs that Hornet receives. This will allow you to play around with her kit and find the right playsytle that fits you.

Note: Tools can only be received when you are resting on a bench. Moreover, you can also equip tools of the same name on multiple crests.

All Tool categories in Hollow Knight Silksong

Tools in Hollow Knight Silksong are color-coded and segregated into three main categories based on their functionality. This also means that a tool can only be equipped onto a crest if it has the corresponding color slot for it.

Tool ColorDetails
RedTools that are marked in red are of the offensive category and can be manually activated during combat. Moreover, these tools have a set number of uses and need to be refilled by using Shards.
BlueBlue tools provide passive buffs. You do not need to activate them manually, and they will be in effect as soon as you slot them in. Blue tools usually offer defensive buffs to Hornet.
YellowYellow tools are mostly for utility. They provide a lot of quality of life during exploration, making it significantly easier to gather resources.

Note: While you can have multiple tools equipped at once, there are certain crests like the Beast crest that only accept a certain color of tools to be equippable.

1) Red Tools

Sting ShardYou will be able to craft this tool by talking to the
Forge Daughter in Deep Docks.
Sting Shard is a trap that you make by binding blades together. Enemies that step on it will be pierced by the exploding blades.
LongpinLocated behind the pink wasp nest.It’s a weighted pin and haft which is used to get through tough shells of enemies.
Threefold PinWhen you reach Greymoor and defeat the gauntlet of birs, you will need to head up the column of balloons and enter the room on the right to find the Threefold Pin there.It’s a weapon that you throw in a set. It’s flat and layered.
CurveclawYou will be able to buy the Curveclaw from the Mottled Skarr at Hunter’s March.It’s an Arched Sharpbone that you use to target flying enemies.

2) Blue Tools

Druid’s EyeYou obtain the Druid’s Eye as a reward for delivering three Mossberries to the Moss Druid.It’s a defensive tool that is made of Mossberries. When you take damage, the amulet will give out a green elixir that will form into Silk.
Magma BellYou will be able to craft the Magma Bell by interacting with the Forge Daughter in Deep Docks.The Magme Bell will help Hornet resist the lethal heat and lava that surround the docks. It’s a very important tool that you will need for exploring certain areas of the map.
Warding BellYou will be able to find the Warding Bell in the far fields.It’s a Holy bell that has a ring of protection inscribed on it. When equipped, it will heal shield Hornet and bind her wounds.
Fractured MaskThe Fractured Mask is purchased from Mottled Skarr at Hunter’s March.The Fractured mask will shield Hornet against critical damage but will shatter on impact. Fortunately, you can repair the shattered mask by resting on a bench.

3) Yellow Tools

CompassYou will be able to purchase the Compass from Shakra for 70 Rosaries.It’s a tracking device made from a shell. When you equip it, Hornet’s location will be marked on the map.
Shard PendantHead to the middle of The Marrow. Here you will find a room at the long Vertical Drop. The Shard Pendant will be located there.When equipped, Hornet will be able to collect more shell shards from defeated creatures.
Magnetite BroochThe Magnetite Brooch can be purchased from Pebb outside the Bell Beast station.The Brooch has a prayer for rosaries inscribed in it, so when equipped, it will pull all loose beads towards it.
Weighted BeltYou can buy the belt from Mort when visiting his Shop.The Weighted Belt will help increase Hornet’s Poise. She will stand firmly in place when striking herself or when being struck by an enemy.
Dead Bug’s PurseThe Dead Bug’s Purse can be found on a corpse in the Wormways.When equipped, Hornet will not loose any Rosaries when defeated.

How to increase Tool slots in Hollow Knight Silksong

Memory Locket Hollow Knight Silksong

To be able to equip more tools on Hornet, you will need to increase the total number of Crst slots that it has. You will be able to do this by getting Memory Lockets. These Lockets can be found through exploration or purchased from NPCs.

Once you have a Memory Locket, head to a bench, open up the menu, and then go to the Crest Tab. Here, you can hover over the locked slots and then unlock them by using a Memory Locket.

You will not get the option to expand the slots on a crest if you do not have a Memory Locket.
