The Dark Thunder is a transformation spell that you will be able to unlock in Black Myth Wukong after completing the Horse Guai quest. It’s one of the more elaborate missions in the action-adventure and starts as early as Chapter 1.
You will not be able to round it out before you reach Chapter 5 and have completed some steps in a specific order. Missing out on one of them will force you to lose out on acquiring the Dark Thunder.
Here is a guide on how you will be able to complete the Horse Guai quest in Black Myth Wukong.
Black Myth Wukong Horse Guai quest guide
1) Talk to the Horse Guai at the Back Hills Shrine in Bamboo Grove (Chapter 1)
The first step of the questline will be to talk to the NPC near the Black Hills Shrine. Once you teleport there, you will need to head the path down, and as soon as you reach the button, head left into a cave.
You will find the Horse Guai sitting to your right. Interact with him, and exhaust all of his dialog to start his questline.
2) Find the Horse Guai in Sandgate Village (Chapter 2)
As you reach Chapter 2, your next meeting with the Horse Guai will be in the Sandgate Village. From the Village Entrance Shrine, you will need to make your way across the gap through the small wooden bridge.
Then make your way along the right till you see some small shrine-like buildings on a hill. You will need to go past it and then head left till you encounter an enemy with a shield standing infront of a building.

Defeat it and head around the building to find a slope, follow it and it will lead you to a village. Look for a large shrine and a pillar to which the Horse Guai is tied. Interact with him and exhaust his dialogs. Then reset the area by resting and you will see that he has moved on.
3) Talk to the Horse Guai in New Thunderclap Temple (Chapter 3)
As you progress through Chapter 3 of Black Myth Wukong you will eventually come across the New Thunderclap Temple. Once you discover the Temple Entrance Shrine, you will need to make your way through the doors of the temple and then head along the left side of the statue till you reach the back exit.
As you continue forward, you will eventually come across a set of stairs. Keep going and head down till you come across another building that you can go into. Once in, take another flight of stairs to the right, which will let you exit the area.
Now turn left and head down the path to find a series of wooden pillars. Behind the fifth pillar, you will find the Horse Guai. Talk to him once again and exhaust his dialogs to reach the next step.
4) Free Horse Guai from the Cocoon in Webbed Hollow (Chapter 4)
Once you reach Chapter 4, you will find the Horse Guai in the Webed Hollow region. From the Middle Hollow Shrine, you will need to keep heading down the path till you spot a torch to your left.
Now head down into the open area using the platforms where you will go up against Centipede Guai. Defeat the boss, obtain its Spirit, and then follow the path onward till you reach the back of the area.

From here head down the slope and head left to reach the bottom. You will find a yellow cocoon at the end. You will need to attack it to release the Horse Guai.
There will be a small cutscene, after which, talk to the NPC and exhaust all of his dialogs, then rest to reset the area. The Horse Guai will then move onto the Furnace Valley.
5) Defeat the Keeper of the Flaming Mountains in Furnace Valley
From the Valley Entrance Shrine keep heading down the path till you reach two large pillars which lead into a magma area. As you keep heading in, you will eventually be up against the Cloudy Mist, Misty Cloud boss. Beat it and then head up the stairs to face another boss, Keeper of Flaming Mountains.
Make sure you have freed Horse Guai from his cocoon before beating this boss.
6) Meet Horse Guai in Furnace Valley
After you have taken out the Keeper of Flaming Mountains you will need to follow the path forward from the Valley Entrance Keeper’s Shrine. Then head left and continue till you reach a magma area.
Make your way through the area as you keep to the right. You will eventually find a statue where the Horse Guai will be waiting for you.
This is your final interaction with the NPC, however, to round out the Horse Guai quest in Black Myth Wukong you will have to fight him and beat him. Once he is down, you will need to inspect the statue and notice that a whip is hanging out of it.
Interact with the whip and pick the option “Pull Forcefully”. As a result, you will obtain the whip and automatically unlock the Dark Thunder Transformation.
