Squalor is used to describe dirty and unpleasant living conditions in Frostpunk 2. There are multiple reasons why this happens, but if you fail to control it, it’ll cause Disease and eventually factions will revolt against you, causing your city to fall.

So, here’s why Squalor occurs in the game, and how you can keep it in check.

Why does Squalor happen

  • Pollution
  • Poor waste management
  • Lack of materials

These are the three main reasons why Squalor happens in your city in Frostpunk 2. Here are a few methods to help you keep it in check.

How to reduce Squalor in Frostpunk 2

As mentioned above, Pollution is a major contributor to Squalor in Frostpunk 2. So, when you’re building your city, make sure to plan it effectively.

You don’t want to place too many Housing Districts near Industrial Districts, because this will increase the Pollution levels in your Housing Districts.

It’s also worth noting that you need proper waste disposal methods in place. For example, make sure to build enough Filtration Towers in your Housing District. This will ensure that you city won’t be polluted, and if you place proper Ventilation Towers, you will also end up unlocking the Rapid Filtration ability for your district.

While these Towers will deal with gaseous pollutants, you also need to have methods to deal with solid waste. To help with this, you’ll need to build Waste Management Facilities like Waste Repurposing Facility or Waste Incineration Facility.

Moreover, make sure you place proper Extraction Districts near resource nodes like Iron deposits and so on. This will ensure that your city has a steady supply of materials, which in turn will ensure that it doesn’t fall into Squalor.

Finally, passing certain laws with respect to the workforce will also help you reduce Squalor and eventually control disease levels in Frostpunk 2.
