While Dynasty Warriors Origins mostly has you play as the protagonist during its intensive, drawn out campaign, it is still possible to switch between friendly NPCs (in this case, Companions) during battles.
Companions can be quite versatile and powerful, making them great additions to your team. More on switching characters in Dynasty Warriors Origins below.
How to switch between characters in Dynasty Warriors Origins

In short:
- Pay attention to your companion’s health bar.
- There will be a blue charge meter below the HP bar.
- This bar fills up over time as you keep fighting.
- Execute attacks, dodges, Weapon Arts and assaults to fill up the gauge faster.
- Once the blue meter is full, a ‘Change Character’ button will appear.
- Hold down the ‘Down’ button for two seconds to instantly switch to your Companion.
- Use the View button on Xbox or Touchpad on PlayStation to execute this. PC players can use the C button instead.
Make sure to bring a Companion with you into battle, during the War Council preparation phase just before the battle begins. You will also not be able to switch between other Companions during battle.
Quirks to keep in mind while controlling Companions in Dynasty Warriors Origins
While controlling characters other than the protagonist is quite thrilling and a refreshing change of pace, this does come with some serious drawbacks and quirks.
For starters, you can only control your Companion for exactly a minute, after which you will return to controlling the protagonist instead.
You can keep track of the time remaining by paying close attention to the blue bar that drains over time.
Additionally, Companions also possess their own Musou and Health bars which must be taken into consideration.
Thankfully, Companions automatically start with maxed out Bravery and HP when switching to them, so this should make things a bit easier. Switching also begins the battle with a large attack, so make sure to target enemies while doing so.
