Hextech Chests and Keys are making a return in League of Legends with patch 25.S1.9 (15.9) and will be dropping alongside the new season’s Arena. The chest system has been revamped in the MOBA, and acquiring Hextech Chests is a whole different than what it used to be before they were removed.

How to get Hextech and Masterwork Chests in League of Legends
You will obtain Hextech Chests by progressing through the battle pass and having high Honor in League of Legends. You will receive a minimum of eight free chests and Hextech keys by progressing through the battle pass and get two additional chests by just leveling up your Honor and then maintaining it for the entire Act.
To progress the LoL battle pass, all you will need to do is to play the marches can complete the daily and weekly challenges that show up in the client. These missions are pretty easy to complete and will only take you a couple of games a day to round them out.
However, gaining more honor is the tougher part as the system will require you to get honor from other players. Players usually tend to honor others who play for the team and have an overall positive attitude.
If you are finding yourself to be a bit more toxic in your recent matches, you can always play the game with friends and end up honoring each other after a match ends.
While Hextech Chests are free to get and open, Masterwork Chests are not as they are tied to the in-game ship and will require you to spend real-life money.
Note: With the revamped Hextech System you will be able to get a maximum of 60 chests and keys every year which is indeed a lot of free cosmetic content.
What are Hextech Keys in League of Legends and how to use them?
Hextech Keys are special keys in LoL that you use to open both Hextech and Masterwork Chests in the game. Once you acquire either of the chest and a key, here is how you will be able to open them:
- Make your way to the Loot tab which is to the top-left of your LoL client and is presented by a hammer and gem icon.
- Then click on the “Crafting” option and then click on one of the chests you want to unlock.
- As long as you have a Hextech Key you will get the option to “Open” at the bottom.
- Once you open the chest you get a free random cosmetic.
How to get Hextech Keys in League of Legends
Hextech Keys were previously obtained by combining key fragments. As seen in the image above, one Hextech Key was made from three key fragments. Now, Hextech Keys are tied to the chests themselves hence you get it by completing the battle pass and having high honor.
You do not need to hunt for fragments anymore by opening Honor Orbs, Champions Orbs, or even Hextech Chests.
