Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza ship upgrade and customization guide

In Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza, you will get to commandeer your own ship, named Goromaru, and unlock powerful upgrades and customizations for it as the story progresses. Upgrading your ship is highly recommended if you’re looking to be the “baddest pirate” on the Hawaiian seas.

There are a lot of difficult foes to overcome as you make it into the later stages of the narrative. So you will need to constantly be on top of your ship upgrades, helping Goromaru get more powerful with each encounter.

Here is a guide that goes over everything you need to know about upgrading your ship in the action-adventure game.

How to upgrade your ship (Goromaru) in Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza

Goromaru Performance Upgrades

You will be able to start upgrading Goromaru after you have completed the initial bits of the narrative and reached Chapter 2. This happens right after you have completely revamped your ship allowing it to have more room for upgrades and equipment.

When it comes to upgrades, you will have access to the Performance Upgrades section that can be accessed from the Disembark option. This is available when you are in the safe zone on the mainland or at the Lighthouses when out at sea.

Goromaru’s Performance Upgrades need a lot of money and are separated into different levels. The highest level is Durability and is separated into the following tiers:

  • Plus
  • Extreme
  • Kiwami

Hence, Durability is not something that you will be looking to upgrade right away. Start with the Boarding crew, then the Fuel Tank (increase Smoke Screen uses), and then finally go for Durability when you have enough money from plundering the Hawaiian seas.

How To customize your Ship (Goromaru) in Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza

Customizing Goromaru in Yakuza Pirate

To be able to customize your ship in Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza, you will need to head to the Equipment section which is under the Performance Upgrades menu. Here you will be able to include and exclude different cosmetic additions including Hull patterns, new Sails, figureheads, and more.

You will be able to purchase cosmetic items from stores or by playing minigames. Exploring different parts of the sea and Hawaii will neet you additional loot as well, so do not shy away from talking to any vendor that you come across during exploration.

Note: Some customization items can be obtained from the purchasable DLC as well. For that, you will need to buy the Deluxe edition of Pirate Yakuza.

How to unlock more ship Equipments and Upgrades for Goromaru in Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza

Change Goromaru's equipment in Pirate Yakuza

To get new equipment and unlock their upgrades you will need to head to Julie’s Gearworks shop in Hawaii. At the start of the game, you will only have access to some basic cannons and their rudimentary upgrades from the Equipment section.

Goromaru has two cannons that you can access from the main deck along with a machine gun and a rocket launcher that can be used while in the middle of a battle out in sea.

To have an easier time in naval warfare you will need to make the most of every piece of equipment on Goromaru. So buy new hardware and upgrade them by securing the required crafting materials.

Crafting mats can either be acquired through exploration or purchased from merchants who can be found near Lighthouses.

Once you have the required materials, head over to Julie and she will help you upgrade the equipment that you want.

The baser equipment is easier to upgrade as all they need are common materials. However, the equipment that you unlock in the later stages will need a fair bit of money and rarer crafting materials.
