If you have been waiting for the next anticipated entry in the Elder Scrolls game series, then we think it’s time to give up. Because the official word from the Director of the franchise, Todd Howard, is that he wants us to forget that Bethesda ever announced it.
The news comes from an official IGN interview with Todd, which was not focused on Elder Scrolls VI, but bringing up the topic was inevitable. Initially, the talk started on the topic of Starfield, which is soon getting its major update on April 7, 2026.
Elder Scrolls fans have been waiting for the sixth entry for years now, and Todd admits that the biggest mistake they ever made was announcing it so early. Now he can’t escape being asked about the game no matter where he goes.
Todd admits that the announcement was made too early
For reference, it has been quite close to a decade since Elder Scrolls VI was first revealed in June of 2018. What’s more amusing is that the game was revealed on the live E3 stage. We all know that the Electronic Entertainment Expo has been dead for a long time.
This really puts into perspective how mis-timed the reveal was, even though it was just a title drop; gamers would assume that it had been in active development for years and would expect it to show up anytime soon now. But it looks like Elder Scrolls VI is on its way to surpass even GTA 6 in release timeline.

“Just pretend we didn’t announce it” was Todd Howard’s response to the question about the game. Which of course was meant to be a joke becuase he goes on to explain how much he has struggled to balance between making sure the game is being worked on, while also having to deal with player expectations, because they have been waiting forever.
Users online are confused and angry at Todd Howard
Todd further says, “If you look back at this Fallout 76, Starfield, Elder Scrolls 6 announcement, that was really about informing our audience.” But fans of the franchise are starved for some news. Some of the words from this interview have been making the rounds all over the internet.
Users on social media platforms such as Twitter/X are confused and angry at Todd’s joking tone, calling everyone to forget about the game.
Some users took the chance to express their frustration with Todd’s attitude toward the questions, and some even suggested retirement.
There’s a clear high demand for the next entry in Bethesda’s flagship RPG franchise. The company recently released an impressive remastered version of one of their classics, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, but that is not enough to satiate a decade-long announcement gap.
Bethesda’s reputation has not been the same at all since Fallout 76‘s abysmal launch, which was marred by bugs and other problems. Neither has Todd Howard’s reputation among fans been as favorable, but we hope in the future he can prove everyone wrong with an impressive sequel to Skyrim.
