Monster Hunter Wilds complete Mounting guide

Being able to successfully mount a monster multiple times will make most hunts significantly more manageable in Monster Hunter Wilds.

This fact is especially true if you are hunting with a party, as a monster mount will give everyone a lot more DPS uptime especially after the monster is knocked down from a successful mount.

So if you are looking to make the most of the mechanics in the RPG, then the guide below will help you out.

How to Mount Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds

Jumping attacks Monster Hunter Wilds

To be able to mount monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, you will need to perform Jump Attack. This can be performed by pressing M1 Mouse button/Triangle/Y when you are:

  • Jumping off a ledge
  • Dismounting your Seikret while moving
  • Swinging from a Wedge Beetle

However, do keep in mind that you will not be able to mount a monster with just one jumping attack. There is a Hidden Mount Meter that you will need to fill to be able to pull off a successful mount.

So you will need to hit the monster a couple of times with the jumping attack to fill up the meter and mount the monster.

Moreover, the mounting damage threshold keeps increasing the more you mount the monster. So after every mount, the hidden mount meter increases and you will need to do additional mount damage to get on top of the monster.

Note: Some of the Insect Glaives basic aerial movesets deal a lot of mounting damage to the monster helping the weapon be the best at mounting in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Other properties of mounting in Monster Hunter Wilds

Mounting Monsters helps create wounds in Wilds

Here are some other properties of mounting that you will need to be aware of in Monster Hunter Wilds:

1) Strong Knife Attacks create wounds

While mounted when you are performing strong knife attacks on the Monster you create a wound on that particular part. Wounds are weakened areas that take more damage and can be further exploited with a Focus Strike.

2) Enough damage leads to a Finisher

When you do enough damage to a monster part when mounted, your Weapon Attack will then convert into a Finisher. A Finisher deals a massive amount of damage to the monster will will knock them down as soon as its animation ends.

3) Changing positions can prevent dismounting

As mentioned, the monster will often try to throw you off its back. Now you can either Brace or change positions to avoid getting thrown off. When the screen darkens it means that the monster is trying to turn you off, so if you fail to move or brace you will lose a large chunk of your stamina.

If your stamina goes to 0 you will automatically dismount.

4) Only large monsters can be mounted

You will only be able to mount large monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds. When you try jump attacks on the smaller monsters they will only take damage. Larger monsters will take Mounting Damage apart from normal damage and you will be able to mount them once you fill up the mount meter.

Note: There might be a chance that Wilds introduces a large monster (like a sort of Raid) that you cannot mount in a future update.

Why should you mount monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Successfully pulling off a mount will not only create more wounds on the monster but also knock them down with a finisher, giving you a window to go in with your hardest-hitting combos. This mechanic is especially useful when you are in a party with other players a successful mount will significantly increase their total DPS uptime making the hunt significantly more manageable.
