“Shame”, DLSS 5 backed by major gaming studios like Bethesda, NetEase and others sparks “supporting…slop” backlash

The latest graphics technology by NVIDIA has united some biggest publishers of the gaming industry—but not in the manner that the company probably hoped for. As DLSS 5 was announced by NVIDIA, it received support from Bethesda, NetEase and others, sparking immediate outrage. The players are not celebrating this tech innovation, but they are accusing all these studios of endorsing what many are calling AI slop—something that fundamentally alters game direction and character artistry.

Industry giants supporting NVIDIA’s DLSS 5 makes gaming community fire back

Bethesda, NetEase, Capcom, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros have all signed up to support the tech as NVIDIA shocks everyone with DLSS 5 tech. Todd Howard has personally confirmed that Starfield and all the futures titles coming from Bethesda will use this new system. However, instead of excitement, this announcement triggered a widespread condemnation across social media.

“Shame on these studios supporting this slop,” posted one of the X users. “I’m sure their employees won’t be pleased reading up that their employer supports this.” This sentiment was echoed repeatedly as gamers started to discover which of the companies had actually partnered with NVIDIA.

Capcom has received sharp criticism. A comment on X read, “I’m more disappointed with @CapcomUSA. This is really out of touch, I’m sure your RE fans will NOT approve this. Grace is a beautiful character, replacing her with a generative AI face is horrible,” showing this tech was disappointment and the biggest disappointment was their favorite titles companies supporting it.

Inclusion of Ubisoft, too drew mockeries with a commentator laughing, stating, “LMAO OF COURSE UBISOFT SUPPORTS IT.”

Another user added, “Of course Ubisoft is in there.” This comment showed that the reputation of this French publisher, amidst core gamers, has made their involvement seem to be much more expected.

What community believes DLSS 5 will do within the gaming industry?

A passionate critique came in from an X user who by no means held back. “AI overlays are CANCER—you want to REWARD bad games/studios with TERRIBLE ART by using AI as a crutch? All you’re doing is encouraging BAD development—why should devs bother making good art if “AI will fix it?”

The user then added, “This meme doesn’t prove DLSS 5 is good.” As per the comment, any game must not need DLSS 5 to begin with, and neither should one reward studios for having bad art and to make bad games.

A user summed up the entire industry support to be dread, stating, “DLSS 5 will be supported by the industry’s biggest publishers and developers incuding Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta, NetEase, S-GAME, Tecent, Ubisoft and Warner bros” Oh we are actually cooked.”

What does DLSS 5 do and what it actually means for gaming?

DLSS 5 getting backed by some major gaming studios like Bethesda and NetEase has sparked sparks supporting this slop backlash

DLSS 5 has introduced what NVIDA called to be “real-time neural rendering model.” As per the report, it infuses pixels with the photorealistic lights and materials. Unlike all previous versions of DLSS, which remained focused on performance boost via upscaling, the current iteration uses generative AI for fundamentally altering how scenes actually appear—at times dramatically changing character faces within the process.

The tech reportedly analyzes all frames for understanding elements like fabric, hair, characters and skin. It then generates visually precise images, handling some complex details, including subsurface scattered on skin or those light interactions with characters hair. As Jensen Huang calls it, this is “the GPT moment for graphics—blending handcrafted rendering with generative AI.”

However, hands-on comparison coming from Digital Foundry revealed some startling results. Within Resident Evil Requiem, Grace Ashcroft, the protagonist, transformed—different eyes, full lips and intense eyeshadow, which was not designed originally. A YouTube commenter said, “I haven’t seen anything more uncanny every in my life.” Another observer further noted that DLSS “gave Grace completely different eyes and makeup. Straight up detrimental to artistic intent.”

Implementation of it in Starfield proved to be equally divisive. Characters now look stage-lit even within environments that lacked such lighting, with a sharpness that cranked to max and bright highlights appeared to be unnatural. Despite it, Todd Howard has defended this choice after seeing Starfield running on DLSS 5. As per him, “It was amazing how it brought it to life. We’ve played it. We can’t wait for all of you to do so as well.”

Who else is supporting DLSS 5?

Mike Bithell, a game developer, offered a blunt assessment on DLSS 5, stating, it is disappointing to see anyone taking this kind of nonsense seriously. As per him, it is all “Such a mess.”

As per NVIDIA, developers have control over everything via adjustable intensity, masking tools and color grading. It allows artists to determine exactly where and how the enhancements actually apply. Vantage Studios Charlie Guillemot claimed that DLSS 5 on Assassin’s Creed shadows is letting them build a kind of world that they have always wanted to.

Now, whether gamers want all those worlds to remain is a big question. With DLSS 5 coming out this fall, in some titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Oblivion Remaster, etc., players will soon find out if AI-enhanced photorealism actually enhances their experience or just erases the artistic identity that they valued.
