7 incredible things to try in Minecraft Oasis AI

The newest development within the generative AI space is the re-creation of video games, by training the said model on thousands of hours of gameplay footage. Oasis AI is one such example, which recreates Minecraft gameplay in a shockingly near  like-for-like manner.

While obviously limited in its functionality, it is nonetheless impressive – with there being a ton of things to do while in the ’game’, some of which will be discussed below.

Things to do in Oasis AI’s ‘Minecraft’

1) Build something

Building something in Oasis AI Minecraft

The very first thing you should do in Decart’s ‘Minecraft’ is to try and build something, after you are done exploring the generated world.

The best way to start with this would be to equip the fences and stone blocks, and try to build a cage or house of sorts.

This is easier said than done though, given the poor visibility and terribly low framerates within the current AI model.

2) Try to kill a Zombie and watch a Creeper explode

One of the several official bounties in Oasis AI involves trying to successfully kill a Zombie and have them drop Rotten Meat. The bounty also includes a subsection which involves having a Creeper explode on contact.

Both objectives can be difficult to complete, given that NPCs spawn very rarely.

3) Watch the world change in real time

One of the more fun things to do with Decart’s ‘Minecraft’ is to watch the world shift and transform in real time. As this is technically a generative AI, even simple actions such as moving around can rapidly change the world in real time.

This can be quite amusing to witness and is much akin to a fever dream.

4) Have a Skeleton shoot at you

Like the vanilla version of Minecraft, Oasis AI’s recreated version also possesses numerous enemies, such as the Skeletons. Skeletons come equipped with weapons, and can rain arrows upon you.

Successfully having a Skeleton shoot at you can be quite the thrilling experience and counts towards the bounty as well.

5) Try to punch the Ender Dragon

This is perhaps the hardest challenge thus far. The Ender Dragon is notoriously difficult to eliminate in the original game, and given the technical limitations of the AI, even managing to land a single punch on the NPC should be quite the feat.

6) Build a house

This is the official, major ongoing Discord challenge of Oasis AI. In short, participants will have to build the best looking ‘house’ they can in under a minute.

A total of 3 winners will be picked, sharing a total bounty of $1800. The contest ends on November 4, 2024 at 11:59 PST.

7) Try to make the AI glitch and ‘hallucinate’

The AI 'hallucinating'

The AI model used is still in its infancy and just a glimpse at what it is capable of. While it could be the future of gaming, it’s not without its limitations in its current state.

The generated game world is incredibly unstable, susceptible to change at a moment’s notice. This might be a good time to test the AI’s capabilities (and limitations) – and watch as the model ‘hallucinates’ into a glitchy mess.
