Top tips for surviving your first night in Minecraft

Minecraft’s Survival Mode can be quite a challenge for the uninitiated, mandating stringent resource management and building skills to survive. Your first night in the game‘s Overworld is likely to be very challenging – given the lack of resources and the general cluelessness that follows when thrust into an open world with little to no instructions.

As such, we have prepared a list of things to follow when going through your first night in Minecraft, to ensure your survival.

Tips and tricks for surviving your first night in Minecraft

1) Punch trees and gather resources

To craft a house, you will need wood. The best way to gather wood is by simply punching a tree until it breaks. At this point of the game, you are likely to not have additional equipment to chop trees faster, so punching remains your best option.

Trim down the tree until you manage to gather several blocks of wood.

2) Begin crafting and build a shelter

To build a shelter, you will need to start crafting. Combine items in the Inventory screen to create new, higher rarity items.

Try combining 4 blocks of wood to create a wooden plank. Combine four of these planks to create a Crafting Table. Use the Table to craft new items, such as a Wooden Pickaxe, which will serve as your first real equipment.

Dig through the ground and arrange the surplus wooden blocks to create a makeshift house.

3) Craft and equip Torches in your vicinity

Combine Coal and Wood to create a Torch. Torches are essential for exploration in Minecraft and also help ward off hostile NPCs.

Equip and place the torches near your house to keep enemies at bay.

4) Head underground and mine

An alternative way to deal with hostile mobs (and possibly kill time) during nighttime in Minecraft is to simply head into an underground cave system.

Drop into the many labyrinths within the randomly generated world, and explore to your heart’s content. Make sure to mine for resources whenever you spot them, as these will come in handy later. Just make sure to avoid any lurking Creepers along the way.

5) Battle against hostile mobs if necessary

If things go south, consider taking up arms against your enemies. Craft and equip a wooden pickaxe to chip away at your foes’ HP. Given the weak nature of this particular item though, it might take a while to kill a spawned foe.

This should be your last resort, and facing enemies directly is generally not at all recommended on your first day.

6) Run!

There is no shame in running away if things don’t exactly go according to plan. Take to the shadows, and avoid direct confrontation. Enemies are a lot more dangerous during the early game (given that you are rather ill-equipped at this stage) and thus avoidance remains the best course.

7) Head inside and sleep it over

If you are done exploring for the night, head inside your crafted home and call it a day. Just make sure to close the door so that no one can enter in, and consider crafting a bed (3 Wool Blocks + 3 Wood Blocks) to sleep in.
