Will Roblox’s partnership with IARC save the platform from being shut down?

Roblox shutdown rumors by September 1, 2025, spread like wildfire last month. It was fuelled by increased lawsuits, international bans, and some viral claims related to Roblox safety failures. Amidst all the chaos and building cases, while Roblox tried to bring out relevant changes, it didn’t work. The recent partnership of the platform with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC), though, can expectably introduce some standard content ratings and more. But as critics argue, it is more of a reactive move and not due to public or legal pressure.

With high-profile figures like Law By Mike and Schlep now pursuing legal actions against Roblox, the question that remains is, can the new initiative of Roblox prevent it from collapsing?

Is Roblox’s partnership with IARC a band-aid or a lifeline?

Roblox partners with IARC trying to resolve increasing users concerns

Roblox, collaborating with IARC, aims to replace the in-house content labels with standardized and region-specific age ratings. These will come through some established authorities like North America’s ESRB and Europe’s PEGI. The goal is to offer parents around the world a trusted and familiar system to gauge content suitability, reinforcing that Roblox is a globally-conscious and safe platform.

As per Roblox’s Chief Safety Officer, Matt Kaufman, the partnership is expected to offer “more clarity and confidence” to the users, especially the young crowd families. However, the initiative does not address core allegations against Roblox directly.

While the new rating system will help to classify content, it doesn’t improve live moderation. It will also not prevent predatory behaviour in real-time. This partnership, despite being a significant step towards transparency, is just a largely reactive measure, as per critics. It will not solve any existing issues of inadequate moderation or user safety, the concerns that sparked lawsuits and international bans.

Can Roblox mounting lawsuits, bans, and public pressure lead to its shutdown?

Roblox is facing an existential threat not from the simple hoax but from the societal and legal challenges. The state of Louisiana filed a lawsuit that has accused Roblox of failing to protect minors from all explicit content, as well as sexual predators. The lawsuit specifically cited games like Escape to Epstein Island’s availability on it. Also, countries including Qatar and Turkey banned the platform outright over concerns of child safety, showing a global distrust in the working of Roblox.

Adding up to all, influential figures are also amplifying the entire backlash. Public figure Schlep has partnered with YouTuber Law By Mike, trying to pursue accountability. Despite no formal lawsuit filed, the campaign is focused on forcing reforms and getting justice for all victims.

Note: A video released from Law By Mike’s YouTube channel has brought forward some disturbing cases, including a case of a minor who was abducted by an adult from Roblox.

The question that now remains is—can a content rating system, despite being improved, counteract the damage the platform faces from severe accusations and international trust? While the partnership is definitely a positive development, it seems just a piece of a larger puzzle. Without addressing fundamental concerns of safety enforcement and live moderation, the risk of Roblox shutdown due to regulatory bans and legal actions remains quite real.
