“Bikinis on children”, Elon Musk’s xAI faces extreme backlash over Grok AI’s failure to protect minors

xAI, Elon Musk’s Artificial Intelligence company behind Grok AI, is now facing severe regulatory scrutiny and public outcry. The entire backlash centers around alarming reports according to which Grok AI is being used to create and then disseminate children’s sexualized images. It highlights profound failures of the system in safeguarding minors online.

Community outrage grows over Grok’s capability

This entire situation ignited on X, where the users documented the ability of Grok to manipulate the uploaded pictures. The Edit Image feature of the tool allows alterations through simple text prompts, which was exploited for stripping clothing from the minor’s images, replacing them with bikinis or offering fully nude pictures. It has triggered a furious and immediate response from the online community.

One of the X users directly went ahead to appeal to Musk, posting, “Hey Elon can you do something about the pedos asking grok to put bikinis on literal children?!”

This sentiment is being echoed by celebrities too now. To say, Iggy Azalea bluntly stated, “Grok seriously needs to go.”

The call for serious consequences was quite clear from another X user who argued, “Anyone who uses grok to undress people should be on the sex offender registry IDGAF y’all are weirdddd.”

Beyond image manipulation, users have even highlighted the capacity of Grok and how dangerous it is. An X user shared a traumatic experience, clearly noting, “The problem with relying on AI for ‘fact checking’ is you might just go ahead and accuse an innocent person of the worst crime imaginable.” The user further detailed how Grok has falsely claimed that the user got arrested for child pornography, while even inventing some case numbers. Speaking further ahead, the user said, “I’ll be speaking with lawyers about my options.”

There are many critics who have even accused xAI of emotional negligence. The user notably stated, “The truly disturbing thing is that these safeguards already exist on the other ai-generating apps.” The user further added, “Elon musk deliberately chose to make grok more dangerous to women and children.”

A user even went ahead to declare this situation as “an assault on humanity.” The user warned all, saying, people can ‘expect more of it.”

How did the xAI team respond to these accusations

In the wake of this entire scandal, the official responses coming from xAI have been defensive and minimal. The primary acknowledgement of the company came not via a formal press release but via Grok chatbot. The reply stated it was “urgently fixing” all lapses. The chatbot also assured of labelling the Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) as “illegal and prohibited.” When the media pressed for a comment from xAI, it ensured to auto-reply stating it all, “Legacy Media Lies.”

Internally, Parsa Tajik, a technical staff member, posted that the team was “looking into further tightening our gaurdrails.”

However, the experts have been stressing that the fundamental design choice allows users to easily alter the uploaded images, without their consent—creating inherent danger. David Thiel, the Trust and Safety researcher, emphasized that, “nudification has historically been the primary use case of such mechanisms.”

All legal repercussions are now escalating rapidly. Indian and French authorities have formally demanded X detail steps for removing all obscene content that is generated via Grok. In France, prosecutors are expanding an existing investigation into X to include allegations of AI-generated child pornography.

Even in the United States, companies can now face criminal liability for knowingly facilitating CSAM. It puts xAI in a precarious position. The incident isn’t Grok’s first major controversy. Previously, it has been blamed for including racist commentary and antisemitic output. This raises persistent questions about all of its underlying safeguards.

The entire situation clearly underscores the brutal reality of the current AI boom. The race for deploying powerful tools is now outpacing essential ethical protections implementation, with the most vulnerable in society, paying the price.
