How to make a Nether Portal switch in Minecraft

Accessing the Nether Realm in Minecraft requires players to build a Nether Portal within the Overworld. Being able to switch it on or off is also of great convenience – which is why assembling a Nether Portal ‘switch’ is one of the first things you should do when journeying to the realm.

More on how to build the switch, and more below for the game.

Ingredients required to build a Nether Portal switch

  • Obsidian
  • 2x Dispenser
  • Piston
  • Stone Blocks (as required)
  • Observer
  • Lever
  • Redstone Dust
  • Redstone Torch
  • Flint and Steel
  • Water Bucket

How to build the Nether Portal switch in Minecraft

Constructing the Nether Portal
  • Build a Nether Portal of appropriate size if you have not already. Use the Obsidian to craft a hollow square/rectangle (4×4 blocks for example).
  • Grab the Dispensers and place both of them within the portal’s hollow interior. Make sure to have the dispensers face toward you.
  • Grab the Stone Blocks and build an L-shaped structure that covers the back of the portal. This is where you will equip the switch – so make sure to craft the structure with accessibility in mind.
  • At the tail end of the L-shaped block, place some Redstone Dust.
  • Attach a Stone Block behind the structure created earlier, and place a Redstone Block on top of it.
  • On the same block, attach a Piston, making sure that it is facing away from the block.
  • Attach an Observer to the Piston, making sure it faces toward the Piston.
  • Connect the Observer-Piston mechanism using Redstone Dust to create a proper loop.
  • Place the Lever to the front of the Obsidian portal (with the Dispensers facing toward you).
  • Equip the two Dispensers with Flint and Steel, along with the Water Bucket respectively.

You can now hit the Lever to activate the Nether Portal at will. Activating the switch again will shut it off, making it quite convenient to use.
