Nintendo accused of “gaslighting” fans with fake news just for some internal security testing

Nintendo has found itself in quite an unusual spot as it was accused of deliberating planting fake rumors, trying to catch internal leakers. What sounded like some spy novel plot involved some supposed announcements of Luigi’s Mansion movie, an Ocarina of Time remake, Star Fox revival and a delayed 3D Mario. Now, knowing about it was potentially just rumors, fans are crying foul and suggesting this is a new low. They are calling this tactic manipulative and want to know if it was just a security drill.

Fans cry foul over fake leaks used by Nintendo for security testing

Social media just erupted with blames after reports surfaced that Nintendo possibly seeded some false information internally. As per the same reports that talked about Nintendo’s controversial plan, its goal was to identify who was leaking secrets of the company. Getting to know about it, posts on X show increased frustration among fans.

A user wrote that it was “Brilliant move, Nintendo. Nothing says ‘we respect our fans’ like gaslighting the entire internet with fake Luigi’s Mansion movies.”

Referring to the rumoured classic-styled Star Fox title for Nintendo Switch 2, another user added, “This hurt badly… if this is ‘fake’ I’m pretty much very upset at Nintendo.”

Some other comments were quite skeptical. They pointed out that many of these leaks got circulated for years on different forums and Reddit.

Summing up this sentiment, a user disappointedly and bluntly wrote, “Why release fake info about games EVERYONE wants only to disappoint?” A comment even questioned how much respect Nintendo had for its audience. The same user further suggested, “Correct, Nintendo doesn’t love you.”

How did Nintendo respond to this news and the entire backlash?

Nintendo accused of gaslighting fans with fake news

Despite all the noise, Nintendo has chosen to stay totally silent. The organization made no press release or a post with some denial or confirmation. This silence from their end is fuelling more speculation. Also, if rumors about a leak problem is actually true, like many on X are questioning, did the company achieve its goal and at what cost?

Nintendo fans are feeling toyed with. All these alleged fake announcements have not been minor, but they touched some of the beloved franchises, including Luigi’s Mansion 4, Star Fox and Ocarina of Time remake (Switch 2). For many fans, these were like dream projects.

A user captured the entire emotional whiplash, suggesting, “These are low hanging fruit and Nintendo needs to lean into this and make some legit bangers.” While others suggested, all this information has been spreading around wildly on different platforms and in different ways.

For now, the long Nintendo stays quiet, the more this entire narrative would shift from some smart security to a total tone-deaf PR. So, whether or not the fake news was real, the damage is already done. Fans, after all, just want transparency and not tricks. So, until Nintendo speaks, all are left with guesses and many with a very displeased mood.
