The only way to get a Gem of the Forest in 99 Nights in the Forest is to combine four Gem of the Forest Fragments. There is no alternate way of obtaining the crafting resource in the game, and to get the fragments themselves, you will have to invest in a fair bit of grind.

The fragments are usually found in chests or as loot from clearing Cultist Strongholds. So when you are out scavenging for the parts, make sure you have a proper weapon to take the enemies head on. Rayguns from the Alien spaceships are great if you can get them early and they will make clearing most strongholds trivial.

Once, you do find the four Gem Fragments, all you will need to do is to drop all of them to the ground and they will automatically merge into the Gem of the Night.
