The Infernal Hordes mode is a brand new wave-based roguelite mode that’s in Diablo 4 Season 5. Just like the Helltides during the last season, this activity is the main highlight of this season.
So, here’s everything you need to know about this mode that looks to be the highlight of the new season.
How to unlock Infernal Hordes in Diablo 4 Season 5
To unlock Infernal Hordes, you will have to reach level 50 first and then unlock World Tier 3. When you do that, you will then receive a new quest called “Of Lambs and Wolves.” It is through this quest that you will get to unlock and progress in this new activity.
How to play Infernal Hordes mode
To access the Infernal Hordes mode in Diablo 4 Season 5, you will need to use the Infernal Compass.
The rules for the mode are as follows:
- Each wave of the Infernal Hordes mode in Diablo 4 Season 5 will last for 90 seconds.
- As you defeat monsters, you’ll earn a currency known as Burning Aether.
- At the end of each wave, you’ll be able to choose from three different powerups that will grant you a boon and a bane, and will affect the overall difficulty of your next run.
- After you’ve completed all the waves, you will have to face the Fell Council. Defeating the Fell Council will grant you a choice of rewards.

Diablo 4 Infernal Hordes rewards
After you’ve defeated the Fell Council, you’ll be able to spend the Burning Aether that you’ve earned to purchase rewards. They are as follows:
- Spoils of Equipment
- Spoils of Materials
- Spoils of Gold
- Spoils of Greater Equipment (which guarantees an item with a Greater Affix).
How to get Infernal Compass
You’ll get this compass from the following sources:
- You’ll get the first Infernal Compass by completing a brand-new questline that’s being introduced in the new season.
- You’ll earn subsequent Infernal Compasses by completing Nightmare Dungeons, defeating Endgame Bosses, and from Whisper Caches.
Infernal Compass Tiers
It’s worth noting that there are different Tiers of Infernal Hordes that you can access in Diablo 4 Season 5. These Tiers are governed by the type of Infernal Compasses that you earn during your play through.
Infernal Compasses can be earned from Tier 1 to Tier 3 by completing Helltides, and can drop from the Whisper Caches from the Tree of Whispers.
Once you start completing Nightmare Dungeons, you’ll come across Tier 4 and Tier 5 Infernal Compasses from this source too. Alternatively, you can also run The Pit, because they drop Infernal Compass Tier 4 – 8.
In case you don’t want to farm for this item, you can also craft it at the Occultist by using Sigil Powder and Forgotten Scrolls. It’s also worth noting that you can upgrade your Infernal Compass in Diablo 4 Season 5 using Abyssal Scrolls.
