Dragoon is one of the most iconic classes in Final Fantasy XIV, so it’s not a surprise that it has remained one of the most popular picks for players throughout the multiple expansions.
The dragoon starts off from the lancer class in base ARR, after which you can unlock the Dragoon once you reach a certain story mission and level 30 on any of your combat classes.
Historically, Dragoons are very closely tied to Ishgard’s own history with the Dragonkind. Yes, we are yet again going back to the story of the Dragonsong War.
The unique aerial style of combat associated with Dragoon was one of the key factors that allowed these fighters to go toe to toe with the flying wyverns.
Who are the Dragoons in Final Fantasy XIV?
If we refer to the lodestone, it says: “Taking to the firmament as though it were an extension of the land, they descend upon the enemy with every ounce of their bodies behind the blow. It is this penetrative power that characterizes the dragoon. “
During the events of the Dragonsong War, many Dragoons came to be known as aces on the battlefield, but there were equal parts who were slayed, because of which certain excellent soldiers from the ranks of temple knights were also recruited as part of the dragoons to replenish their ranks.
Estinien was one of them. Due to the nature of the training, not a lot of recruits could make it up to the rank of Dragoon; however, those who did got the right to join the order of the Knights Dragoon.
The order of the Knights Dragoon also had its own hierarchy, at the top of which stands the Azure Dragoon.
The Azure Dragoon wears the Drachen armor and wields the famous spear known as Gae Bolg, but that’s not all.
To become an Azure Dragoon, it is not enough that you only fight well. Rather, there was a secondary requirement. Being chosen by the eye of Nidhogg.
Only those who were deemed the best of the best and chosen by the Eye of Nidhogg could rise up to the rank of the Azure Dragoon, leaving their mark on the ever-expanding history of Ishgard as one of its greatest warriors.
