The Black Mage is another extremely popular class in the Final Fantasy franchise; we all have surely seen Vivi from FF9 right?
Well, to no one’s surprise, FFXIV also has black mage as one of the many classes the player can choose.
Starting off from Thaumaturge, black mages use the power of the three elements, fire, ice, and lightning, to do massive amounts of damage.
As such it is one of the magical ranged DPS of FFXIV; the lodestone for Black Mage reads:
“In days long past, there existed an occult and arcane art known as black magic—a potent magic of pure destructive force born forth by a sorceress of unparalleled power. Those who learned to wield this instrument of ruin came to be called black mages, out of both fear and respect for their gift. Yet great power served to corrupt the judgment of mortal man, and so he unknowingly set out upon the path of ruin. Adventurers who take the black will become agents of devastation, capable of annihilating those who oppose them through little more than the force of their will. “
Who are the Black Mages in Final Fantasy XIV
The history of Black Magic is also pretty interesting, to say the least.
In the fifth astral era, a genius sorcerer who was quite obsessed with his research into destructive power, wove the first spell known as the “black magick” and a variety of destructive incantations and arcane weaponry.
With a multitude of willing students, soon the order of the black mages was formed and became the offensive core in Mhach’s forces in the war of the Magi.
But with great destructive power came equally dire consequences. The land’s aether completely dried up, leading to both sides suffering huge losses, ushering in the sixth umbral era.
Following this, the users of black magic were quite looked down upon and mistrusted; black magick itself was then branded as a forbidden art.
But not for long! As mankind’s thirst for knowledge led to one named Quruka Ququruka breaking the seals of the ancient tomes, after which he took the teachings of the black magick in his heart, and donned the robes of a long forgotten era.
And with this, Black Magic became quite a well-known offensive force all over the lands of Eorzea.
