Horrors From The Deep in Deadlock

Deadlock never ceases to amaze with its lore-building and world design. Valve pulls from different horror and noir media tropes and magically creates a cohesive whole out of them. So this time we are going to talk about horrors from the depths of the ocean.

The Deep is a location in the world of the Deadlock, which is situated near the Bermuda Triangle. Due to the maelstrom event, the existence of all kinds of extradimensional beings has become a reality. And this includes creatures like the Lochness monsters, because everything that is supposed to be fiction in the real world is just another normal occurrence in the Cursed Apple.

So one of the main characters participating in the summoning ritual is a creature from the deep. Meet Viscious, a gooey body of jelly that is supposed to be a throwback to a sea creature from horror films like Creature from the Black Lagoon, except he is not really all that scary.

Viscous is inspired by deep-sea creature horror media

Viscous is supposed to be a psychic sea anemone formed completely out of gooey green ectoplasm, allowing him to shapeshift at will. Since the game is still in alpha, Viscous has had the misfortune of not receiving a final model yet.

His current iteration in the game feels very out of place and is put together by recycled assets from Kelvin. We can literally see him hold the same kind of gun, and if we look closely, his 3D rig is still visible inside the character.

Viscous has come out to the surface right on time for the ritual because he wishes to summon the patrons in order to help protect the deep, which is his home. While at it, he also intends to free his “brothers” from the aquariums of the surface.

More creatures from the Deep were supposed to be in the game

There have been leaks and rumors around Viscious getting a remodel sometime in the future, and we hope that it will be something that better fits his lore. In Deadlock’s previous iteration, which is Neon Prime, the character was supposed to be a puffer fish in a jar, controlling a massive suit, which was a neat idea.

One fun trivia about Viscous is that he was not the only creature from the deep who was supposed to take part in the ritual. A now scrapped hero named Slork was intended to fight for the patrons as well.

We do not know much of the lore behind the character, but looking at his scrapped design, we can guess that Valve could not figure out a way to fit him in the current iteration of the game.
