How Nanamo saved Ul’Dah from doom during the Seventh Umbral Calamity

Nanamo Ul Namo had one of the biggest character developments out of all the Alliance Members in Final Fantasy XIV. Initially, she might have come across as one of the weaker leaders who needed the Flame General by her side as a constant source of support.

But what is immediately apparent about her is her strong resolve and the desire to do what is necessary for her people.

One such strong example can be seen during the Seventh Umbral Calamity when the Sultana saved Ul’dah from certain doom.

With Raubahn having left for the Carteneau Flats, Nanamo was sick with worry, constantly trying to figure out what she needed to do. She barely ate, had sleepless nights, and the Lalafell soon became a shadow of her former self, with sunken cheeks and bags under her eyes.

It wasn’t before Pipin and Thancred’s reprimand that she finally started seeing to some of her duties, which now included praying for Eorzea’s salvation.

Nanamo saves Ul’Dah from chaos after Bahamut breaks free

Finally, for a moment, Nanamo did not feel like a powerless puppet who was constantly swayed by the Merchant’s Guild.

And it was during her time in the Milvaneth Sacrarium that all hell broke loose. With Bahamut now breaking free of Dalamud, chaos and riots spread like wildfire in the streets of Ul’Dah.

But instead of choosing to hide, Nanamo wanted to aid those who were suffering. While making her way to the commotion, she spots Mumuepo, the then High Priest of the Order of Nald’thal and Master of the Thaumaturges’ Guild, instructing his followers to incinerate anyone who would dare come near the Ossuary.

She immediately reprimands him, and along with Pippin and five others from the guild, she steps out onto the stricken streets of Ul’dah. And wherever she looked, all she saw was carnage. A girl was crying over the charred body of her mother, while a man had his feet crushed beneath falling stone.

In the middle of the chaos, she and her band reached Emerald Avenue, which is where the Sultana addressed her citizens. The Thaumaturges lit up the sky with their conflagration to draw the attention of the rioters. And once Nanamo had their full attention, did she then talked about how they must make their way through the Seventh Umbral Calamity and how the Immortal Flames are risking their lives so that Ul’dah may yet see a new dawn.

Nanamo’s compassion and courage help pacify the mob, and they start doing exactly what she asks of them. To tend to the wounds of their nation—of their shared home!

The Sultana later issued a decree that stripped Mumuepo of all official titles and accompanying privileges. What helped her cause was the evidence of rampant corruption that was found with the high priest at the very centre of it all.

Moreover, the five Lalafellin brothers, who, along with Pippin, accompanied Nanamo to the Emerald Avenue, were now made joint masters of the Thaumaturges’ Guild.
