How to grow crops in Minecraft: Complete farming tutorial

It is no surprise that farming is essential in Minecraft. There are a wide variety of crops available in the game to help you regenerate health, tame animals, and many other things.

Finding crops in the wild can be a hassle, which is why setting up automated farms in your base is recommended.

Mojang’s survival title has a fairly realistic farming system, though, as crops only grow when certain conditions are met. So, here’s a rundown of all the crops in Minecraft and how to grow them.

How to grow crops in Minecraft

You need a hoe to turn any grass or dirt block into farmland in Minecraft. The tool comes in all rarities but the only aspect affected by material is durability.

Fill the first two blocks of the top row of the crafting menu with the desired source (wood, rock, gold, diamond, etc.) and place two sticks in the middle column to craft a hoe. The same has been showcased in the image below as well:

The shape of your farmland doesn’t matter. However, just make sure to have a block or line of water near because crops grow much faster in irrigated land (dark brown color indicates a block is irrigated).

An important fact to note is that a single block of source water can irrigate a 9×9 area. This is why a 9×9 grid with a block of water in between is considered the ideal farm size in Minecraft.

You’ll have to alter the pattern and shape of your farm for certain crops too. For instance, you’ll have to leave an adjacent block empty for melons and pumpkins.

In the image below, the farm on the left would work for crops like carrots, potatoes, beetroot, and wheat. To grow pumpkins and melons, the farm on the right is suitable:

To boost crop growth in Minecraft, use bonemeal. You can get the item easily by placing a bone block or bones in the crafting menu. Finally, to harvest your output, just interact with the plant or break it with your in-game hand.

How to keep your crops in Minecraft safe

You’ll need to place a fence around your farmland to save it from mobs and animals in the open world. Make sure to place torches above the fence so you have a consistent source of light above your plants. Torches also come in handy if you want to grow crops underground.
