“is this not illegal?” Sony gets slammed for dynamic pricing update, charging more money for some users

Sony has rolled out their dynamic pricing update, which seems to be causing a lot of confusion for users. The goal of this system was to allow users from other regions to access varying prices on the digital store’s games.

This will not work with recently released games, but for released games, this would allow certain users discounts on purchases tailored specifically to them. Unfortunately, the system seems to be already backfiring on social media.

Notorious Twitter/X account Pirat_Nation, known for riling up controversies, has thrown the PlayStation company into the fire, with a post that complains how certain users are seeing increased prices due to the dynamic pricing update.

Sony started testing dynamic pricing a while back

The change coming to Sony’s digital store was originally reported by psprices. Users from different regions would experience different pricing, with discounts ranging up to 17.6%. The dynamic pricing test involved over 150 games in 68 regions, over a period of 3 months.

The website also reported that, after finding out that some lucky users would experience special and exclusive discounts that went beyond 50%. As already observed, the dynamic price change would not exclude Sony’s first-party titles.

AAA games such as Helldivers 2 and God of War were a part of this test as well. Unfortuantely due to drastic changes in market conditions, the changes had to be limited to certain regions, with the United States and Japan being completely exempted.

Varying pricing on games is already a thing due to regional pricing, but it’s mostly controlled by the publishers themselves. With Sony taking matters into their own hand,s controversies of price surge would eventually become a thing.

Some users took this moment to dunk on Sony

This is likely what is happening right now on social media. After the recent tweet from Pirat_Nation, users have come forward to call out Sony, with some making fun of the famous tagline of the company.

Other users took this moment to criticize Steam for constantly being slammed with lawsuits. The current one is about a 30% cut on games. Users pointed out how Sony almost takes a similar amount of cut, but now they can raise that further with dynamic pricing.

Sony might find themselves in deep trouble if more users started popping up within the same region, complaining after learning that one of them purchased the same product for an incredibly discounted price

We are expecting more developments on this situation, with more users coming forward with price surge reports out of nowhere.
