Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is definitely one of the most impressive RPGs released last year, which got an abysmal amount of online hate propaganda paraded around it for no good reason. The majority of it stems from the toxic online community that targeted its gay romance choices.
Coupled with the recognition at last year’s Game Awards, apparently because an award show definitely determines why a game fares in the industry. Executive producer and studio co-founder, Martin Klíma, in an interview with PC Gamer, shut down these controversies.
People online claimed that the game’s sales were impacted due to its various romance choices. Martin Klim confirmed that, if anything, all the pandering online actually helped spread word of the game.
Online controversy helped promote the game
A year earlier, Warhorse had admitted that they were ‘fed up’ with how people online reacted, as their motive has always been to focus on making ‘cool videogame.’ They wanted nothing to do with the controversies, saying that they hated being dragged into culture wars continuously.
Social media platforms such as Twitter/X and others have become a place of respite for individuals imposing culture wars and bigotry. This issue is not just isolated to Warhorse Studios’ games; other media that don’t align with the online grifter ideologies are constantly dragged around.

“My personal take on this is that this whole kerfuffle only mattered to, really, a handful of terminally online culture warriors, and that they are basically an insignificant intersection with the gaming public writ large, and the real players really don’t care about it at all, and probably most of them never really even heard about these pseudo-controversies.” Martin Klim said in the interview with PC Gamer.
History of the Kingdom Come Deliverance franchise
Kingdom Come Deliverance is a franchise that has been at the center of these trivial online controversies. The original game had to face some flak over its representation of characters and medieval history accuracy.
The second game seems to have found itself caught up between the other extreme end of the political spectrum. Romance options portraying same-sex mingling between multiple cultural backgrounds.
Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is a massive open-world action-RPG with a first-person view for realistic accuracy in combat. In an industry where most of the developers are working on fantasy as a major inspiration for medieval settings, Warhorse set out to go the opposite direction with historical accuracy and realism.
As the Executive producer already said that the backlash online did little to actually keep players from buying the game. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 reportedly sold over 2 million copies within the week of its release and has been hailed by many as their personal game of the year.
