Wounds or wounding is a new gameplay system in Monster Hunter Wilds that you will need to have a firm grasp of if you are looking to have an easier time during your hunts. The feature creates weak spots on monsters allowing you to exploit them by breaking the part and obtaining more monster materials as a result.
Wounding is closely tied to Focus Mode and Focus Strike. The Focus system will let you target the monster’s wounds once they appear and deal massive damage to them often stunning the monster and letting you follow the attack up with another powerful move.
So if you are looking to make the most of the wounding system in the RPG, then the guide below will help you out.
How to Inflict Wounds in Monster Hunter Wilds

To inflict a wound you will need to keep attacking the same monster part. So when a hunt begins, make sure to be a bit more aggressive and keep attacking the most accessible monster part over and over again.
Once it receives enough damage, you will start seeing scars and scratches which will signify that the monster part is now wounded.
You will need to hit the same part multiple times for it to become wounded in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Alternatively, another way of creating wounds is to mount the monster. Mounted attacks start creating a wound on the monster’s back right away. Once the entire mounting process is complete, not only will you create multiple wounds on the monster but also knock it down giving you more room to hit it with your best combos.
How to destroy wounds in Monster Hunter Wilds

Once you start creating a wound on a monster, you will then be able to destroy it by dealing enough damage. Wounds on monsters act as weak points, allowing you to do more damage to them.
So if you are focusing all your DPS on them or hitting them with a Focus Strike, you will be able to beak the wounds right away.
Destroying a wound can also knock down the monster. This will provide you with a huge opening to hit them with some of your hardest-hitting combos.
All special properties and effects of Wounds in Monster Hunter Wilds
1) Wounds take more damage than other body parts
As mentioned, wounds act as weak points on monsters. They take way more damage from normal attacks than the other non-wounded body parts, so much of your game plan will revolve around exploiting as many monster wounds as possible during a hunt.
2) Destroying wounds usually knocks monsters down
In most cases when you destroy a monster’s wound you will be able to knock it down. This leads to a big opening that you can then exploit with your best weapon combos.

3) Destroyed Wounds cannot be reopened
Once you have created and destroyed a wound on a particular body part, you will not be able to wound it again. So to take advantage of the system, it’s best to target a different part to create another set of wounds on it.
4) Wounds get highlighted with Focus Mode
When you enter Focus Mode with your weapon you will automatically start to highlight all the wounds that you have created on the monster. This is marked in red, allowing you to have a much easier time tracking them and aiming for them.
5) Destroying wounds will net extra monster parts
Destroying wounds will let you collect extra materials from monsters thereby making farming specific parts even more efficient in Monster Hunter Wilds. As soon as you destroy a wound, you will get a notification that the weakened area is destroyed and you have obtained a specific monster material as a result.
6) Wound Destruction is different from Part Break
Destroying a wound is not the same as destroying a part in Monster Hunter Wilds. A part break is when you are completely chopping away at a monster’s region like severing its tail/tentacle or breaking its horns, etc. Destroying wounds can often lead to a part break when you have destroyed enough wounds in a particular area.
Moreover, wound and part destruction offer different sets of material rewards.

7) Focus Strike deals heavy damage to wounds and stuns
When you activate Focus Mode, you will be able to perform a Focus Strike on wounds or other weak spots. When this move lands it stuns the monster while dealing a significant amount of damage to them.
The best time to use Focus Strike is when you know that you are close to destroying a wound. So hack away at the weakened part and when you feel that you are about to break it, go into Focus Mode by pressing R1/RB/Shift and then hit the wound with your weapon’s unique Focus Strike.
Some weapons will let you go into a follow-up attack after a successful hit.
8) Certain weapons will get specific benefits from Wound Destruction
Certain weapons will gain special benefits when they destroy a wound. This is different from a follow-up attack and is more of a unique weapon mechanic that lets you have more options. Here are all the weapons that gain additional effects from Focus Strikes:
Weapon | Additional Effect from Focus Strike |
---|---|
![]() | Increases the Spirit Gauge Level. The level increases based on each wound destroyed. |
![]() | You enter the Axe Power-Up state after a Focus Strike. |
![]() | Activate the Axe Power-Up state or extend its duration if it’s already active. |
![]() | You will get to all three extracts (Red, White, Orange) after a Wound is destroyed from a Focus Strike. |
![]() | Stores up to 5 melody effects. |
9) Wound Infliction is consistent for all weapon types
While the different weapon types might have unique effects on wounds, they are quite consistent in inflicting them. When used right every weapon has the same effectiveness in creating and breaking wounds on monsters.
Moreover, different weapon attributes like blunt attacks, severe attacks, and the various ammo types have similar wounding capabilities as well.
