Top 10 Video Games Where You Play as A Werewolf

Out of all the popular horror media creatures, ‘werewolf’ seems to have the least amount of games in which you can play as them. But still, the few out there that do allow you to play as these night creatures are actually worth checking out.

In the list below, we will be discussing some of these video games where you can play as a werewolf.

When we think about Werewolves, the first thing that comes to our mind is of a superhuman, beastly figure that can rip and tear through anything. So let’s start things off with a game that lets you do just that.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is a third-person action game where gamers can play as a character with the ability to transform into a werewolf. Although that sounds pretty straightforward, the game is actually derived from an existing tabletop RPG.

In the game, you step into the shoes of Cahal, who is trying to fight against global corporations that are causing pollution. If you are looking for a game to play where you are a werewolf, then look no further than Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood.

Altered Beast

If you are someone who was born in the arcade era, then you have definitely come across the title Altered Beast. It is one of the oldest video games that actively allowed gamers to transform and play as a werewolf.

Altered Beast is a side scrolling beat-em up game developed by Sega. It was released for the arcades back in 1988 and then later for Sega home consoles and even the Nintendo Entertainment System.

The gameplay is set in a Greek mythological world, where the player character is chosen by Zeus himself. The player character is tasked with rescuing Athena, and his powers include transforming into magical beasts. One of the transformations includes turning into a werewolf.

The Wolf Among Us

Moving away from the usual action-combat-oriented werewolf games, The Wolf Among Us takes us to the world of adventure games. Telltale Games, despite having a troubled history, is well known for creating some of the best modern adventure games.

The Wolf Among Us is a game based on the Fables graphic novel series published under DC’s Vertigo comics. The story of the games is officially a prequel to the comics. We step into the shoes of Bigby Wolf, who is investigating a mysterious string of murders.

Bigby is based on the fable of ‘Big Bad Wolf’, appearing in various children’s fairy tales. In the game, he is a human character with the ability to transform into a werewolf.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The Elder Scrolls franchise is one of the most prolific Western RPG franchises out there. We shall be talking specifically about the fifth entry in the series, Skyrim. The game is developed by Bethesda and is set in the Skyrim region of the great Elder Scrolls world of Tamriel.

You play as a character who turns out to be the Dragonborn, a prophesied figure. Skyrim is a game where players are allowed to live out their utmost supernatural fantasies. This includes going down a quest line that grants you abilities that change how you can play and perceive the game.

Following a particular string of quests, which we don’t want to spoil away, one can attain powers that allow werewolf transformation.

Bloodborne

Bloodborne is a well-respected action game developed in collaboration with Sony’s defunct Japan Studios and FromSoftware. It’s a pity that there is no modern re-release of this title, which is locked to PlayStation hardware.

Moving away from the usual medieval fantasy setting, this video game took the souls-like formula to a Victorian horror setting. While the main attraction is the underlying cosmic horror plot, the game unsuspectingly drops players amidst a beastly pandemic.

During gameplay, players will find enemies in every corner of the street, slowly transforming into beasts. Eventually, through progression in the game, one will find that it is possible to attain the power of werewolf transformation.

Darkstalkers

It often surprises people when they find out that Capcom has developed more fighting games than just the Street Fighter franchise. There is no doubt that it is the most important one in the genre, but we would like to divert your attention to another important title.

Darkstalkers was an experimental fighting game title that was created by Capcom after the success of Street Fighter 2. It introduced a lot of new mechanics, such as chain combos, push blocking, and other inventions that became genre staples.

But what does it have to do with our current topic of discussion, you may think. Well, Darkstalkers is a fighting game where all the characters are based on traditional horror media figures.

This includes vampires, succubi, zombies, and yes, werewolves. The character Jon Talbain is a skilled martial artist who can turn into a werewolf. It’s an interesting playable archetype as it blends the idea of a werewolf disciplined in martial arts techniques like kung-fu.

Bloody Roar

Darkstalkers is not the only fighting game where you get to play as a werewolf. Bloody Roar, a lesser-known 3D fighting game developed by Hudsonsoft in the late 90s, also allows the same.

You get to choose from a roster of fighters who can transform into various anthropomorphic animals, allowing access to new abilities. One of these transformations is obviously werewolves.

This is definitely one of the unique video games where multiple characters can be turned into werewolves, with each having its own unique play style. It is a real shame that the franchise is not available on modern systems and is pretty much lost to time.

Blood of the Werewolf

Blood of the Werewolf is going to be one of the lesser-known video games on this entire list. But it deserves its spot because it is a game where you get to play as a werewolf. Created by the indie developers at Scientifically Proven, this is a 2D sidescrolling platformer.

It should also be noted that this is one of the few games where the main playable werewolf is a female character. You step into the shoes of Selena, who is on the path of vengeance, after her husband is killed and her child is kidnapped.

Gameplay involves traversing through various platform designs, switching between both werewolf and human forms. You shoot through waves of enemies as a human, but when there’s a full moon in the background, you can instantly transform into a powerful werewolf.

Sonic Unleashed

You might wonder, what is a Sonic title doing under a list about games where you get to play as a werewolf? Well, if you are not a part of the hedgehog’s fandom, you might not know that Sonic can transform into a werehog in Sonic Unleashed.

It became a huge meme in the community when the game was originally released. But in recent times, the fans have come to appreciate the game for what it is.

The gameplay is just like most other 3D Sonic platformer titles, with a fixed day and night cycle having separate mechanics. During daytime levels, it’s a regular fast-paced Sonic platformer. But during the nighttime levels, Sonic transforms into his new werehog form, and the whole game turns into a more action-brawler style of video game.

Diablo IV

Diablo II elevated the very essence of dungeon crawlers to a much faster-paced action game. If you are not aware of this franchise, then all you need to know is that it’s an isometric action RPG series with insane amounts of loot drops.

The fourth entry in the franchise allows players to dungeon crawl through levels and hordes of enemies as a werewolf. However, it must be noted that players must start the game as a Druid. It is the only class that allows players to turn into a werewolf.

Players will need to go down the werewolf-related skill path, which will give access to transformation. Werewolf gameplay experience can be further enhanced by builds that enhance the combat capabilities.
