Top 10 Video Games Where You Play as A Witch

We might seldom think about it, but there are a lot of video games out there where you get to play as a witch. Most of these games do not really go into the occult-horror idea of a witch and are more action-oriented. But there are a few that might incorporate that idea really well.

We compiled a list of video games that you should check out if you are looking to play video games where you get to play as a witch.

Best Video Games With Witches

Bayonetta

We can’t really start talking about witches without kicking things off with the most iconic character to do it ever. The story behind Bayonetta’s creation is interesting because the creator was also behind Capcom’s Devil May Cry franchise.

After leaving the company, Hideki Kamiya, along with other ex-Capcom devs, merged Seeds Inc. and Odd Inc. to form Platinum Games. One of the earliest games they made was an action title published by SEGA called Bayonetta.

It follows an Umbra Witch named Bayonetta who can shape-shift and destroy foes with firearms. The game became one of the best hack-and-slash series ever made, and one where you can play as a witch.

Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time

Studio Trigger is known for amazing shows such as Darling in the Franxx and Kill la Kill. Another really good show from the anime studio is Little Witch Academia, which, on paper, sounds like a rip-off of Harry Potter. But it is actually a really unique show starring an academy full of witches.

The show was popular enough to get its own video game developed by A+ Games. It was released in Japan in 2017, and then worldwide the next year. Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time follows Akko the witch in training in a new adventure with her friends.

The game faithfully recaptures the art style of the show with its beautiful cel-shading visuals. Gameplay involves our protagonists exploring the academy and labyrinths, switching between 2.5D and 3D styles. This is a game you definitely need to check out if you want a game where you play as a witch.

Hogwarts Legacy

We mentioned how a lot of people think that Little Witch Academia is way too inspired by the Harry Potter franchise. So we are following up with a game from that universe, where you can play as a witch and roam around an academy.

Hogwarts Legacy is an RPG based on the fictional academy of wizardry from the books. It lets players create their own character, one who is chosen to study wizardry. It is set in the 1890s, way before the events of the books.

Released in 2023 by Warner Bros games Studio, it quickly became one of the best-selling games released by Warner Bros in a while. Boasting a fantastical open world, a creature taming system, and robust combat, this is one game you shouldn’t miss out on.

Hades 2

Follow-up to the highly popular isometric roguelike, Hades, is back and has quickly become one of the best games released in recent times. If you haven’t checked it out yet, we should let you know that in Hades 2, you get to play as a witch in training for vengeance.

Hades 2 follows Melinoe, the daughter of Hades and sister to the protagonist of the previous game, Zagreus. Trained by Hecate in combat and witchcraft, Melinoe has access to a plethora of weapons.

Melinoe has huge shoes to fill, after Chronos froze his whole family; she has all but herself on a path to vengeance.

Elden Ring Nightreign

We have talked countless times about FromSoftware. About how they revolutionized the video game industry, introducing a new action sub-genre. Recently, they took a fresh dive into souls-likes with an online live service model.

FromSoftware is known for its beautiful single-player titles, so initial skepticism from the fanbase was obvious. This all changed when the game finally released in 2025, and it has since become one of the most played rougelike titles with frequent updates.

You might wonder what any of that has to do with witches. Well, Elden Ring Nightreign is not a traditional FromSoftware RPG where you get to create characters. Instead, there are preset characters with their own lore and unique skills.

One of them is Recluse, a powerful witch with some of the best support spells in the game. Thus making Nightreign one of the best games where you can play as a witch.

Little Witch Nobeta

Following up on a major souls-like title, where you can play as a witch with another one. But this time it’s not a big-budget game and has a more anime-focused art style. Little Witch Nobita is an indie game made by the Taiwanese developers at Pupuya Games.

You play as the titular witch, traversing through dungeons while acquiring new power-ups. Nobeta has to solve a plethora of puzzles in order to find the answers to her own questions.

It should also be noted that even though Little Witch Nobeta is a souls-like, the gameplay is primarily a 3D shooter. Meele combat obviously exists, but it is secondary to spell-casting, which takes center stage.

Blazblue

Anyone indulging themselves in the fighting game community or fighting games in general has heard about BlazBlue. But if you haven’t, BlazBlue is one of the key franchises in what is called the anime-fighting-game subgenre. Seperating itself from titles such as Street Fighter and Tekken.

It is a pillar franchise from the developers at ArcSystem Works, who are also the creators of the Guilty Gear series. BlazBlue’s lore goes deep, and talking about it would take a lot of time, so that’s a story of another time.

Instead, all you need to know is that the game has a playable witch. Nine the Phantom is a powerful character with a varied arsenal of skills that involve spell casting. If you are looking to play a fighting game where you can play as a witch, then look no further than the BlazBlue franchise.

Noita

Just like we already discussed, there have been a lot of indie games where you get to play as a witch. Noita is just another indie game with the same idea. In fact, the title of the game literally translates to ‘witch’ in Finnish.

It is a roguelike platformer developed by the Finnish developers at Nolla Games. Originally released as an early access game, and then later the full version dropped in 2020.

As a rougelike title, the game’s level designs are procedurally generated. Our witch character traverses through these 2D levels, growing stronger while collecting more spells. As a Finnish game, it introduces us to a lot of the culture’s mythological creatures, which appear as enemies.

Dragon’s Crown

It is a shame that the Japanese studio Vanillaware never releases its games outside of consoles. This is why a major section of gamers won’t ever get to experience most of the amazing games in their catalogue. One of which is Dragon’s Crown, an amazing throwback to side-scrolling beat-em-ups of the arcade era.

Vanillaware is also known for its striking 2D art style, which is very unique in its games. Dragon’s Crown is no different and is probably their most stylized game, having characters with exaggerated features.

One of these characters is a witch with strikingly exaggerated proportions. That may sound like something done purely for fan-service purposes. But don’t let that divert your attention from the fact that she is a playable witch in the video game.

Wytchwood

So far, all the video games we have discussed, which you get to play as a witch, have dealt with combat. Characters showing off their arsenal of skill and spellcasting prowess.

But, there really have been very few games that directly toy with the idea of a ‘witch’. Our idea of the word, which correlates to an occult figure, conjures her spells involving a large cauldron. There is one small, unknown game that does that, and is called Wythwood.

This is a game where you get to play as an actual witch living in isolation. The gameplay involves survival crafting in a world filled with interactable NPCs. Wytchwood could be the next gem you play if you choose to pick it up.
