Vex’s latest build and item options make her one of the best burst mages in the current League of Legends meta. She can easily snowball off early leads and 100-to-0 any enemy carry once she gets a few items under her belt.
However, Vex is a bit more skill-shot-reliant than some of the other meta Mid Laners. This can make her a bit difficult to master giving her a much higher skill-ceiling.
But once you have put in enough practice to familiarize yourself with her kit, Vex can be one of the best Mid Lane champions to climb rank with.

Vex Pros and Cons in League of Legends Season 14
Pros:
- Vex is one of the best burst mages in Riot’s MOBA. She scales incredibly well into the Late Game and can start one-shotting the enemy carries once a fair portion of Vex’s best build options are complete. She can snowball off of early leads and can take over fights if she is able to land her combos.
- Vex is amazing at countering compositions that have a lot of dashes, blinks, and other mobility tools in their kit. She marks champions who dash with Gloom and her abilities do additional damage on them. She also stacks up Doom with her passive, which lets her next basic ability interrupt enemy champion dashes and inflict fear.
- Vex is amazing at clearing waves as well. Her abilities have a lot of range and she will be able to kill minions from the safety of her tower. It’s why it’s so hard to gank her in the Early Game. Vex barely overextends as she is more concerned about scaling in the laning phase than to aggressively push in lanes and look for advantages.
Cons:
- Vex is very mana-hungry in the Early Game. This makes her item reliant and you will not be having much of an impact in skirmishes if you do not have a good portion of her best build options made. Vex from behind can be a pretty bad experience, and depending on the comp you are up against, you will often be forced to play a more passive game.
- Vex is very squishy and lacks reliable escape tools. Apart from her ultimate, she has no other mobility options in her kit, if she is caught out overextending or positioning incorrectly in a fight, she will be bursted down instantly. Much of Vex’s game plan will therefore be around positioning in a skirmish and when she should be going with her Shadow Surge.
- Vex is skill-shot-reliant making her one of the harder champions to master in League of Legends. She has a high skill ceiling and it will take a fair bit of practice on her to be able to effectively pilot her. Vex is not recommended for those who are new to the Mid Lane.
How to play Vex: Tips and Tricks for League of Legends Season 14

Early Game:
- Vex’s Early Game will primarily be about farming and staying relevant in Gold and XP. Her laning phase is rather weak due to how mana-hungry she is, so concentrate on last-hitting minions and farming under the tower if you are up against a counter-pick. Only push up the lane only when you are aware of the enemy Junglers positioning.
- Ward around your lane. This will especially help you out if you are up against a dive-heavy composition. While playing as Vex you will usually not push up the lane, it’s still important to have vision and know more about the enemy’s positioning. This will prevent you from giving away free kills.
- Conserve your Doom stacks for when the enemy Jungler ganks. This will interrupt their gap-closing abilities and even inflict them with fear. This will make it significantly harder for them to get a kill on you or to force you to blow your Summoners.
Mid Game:
- Vex starts becoming more relevant around skirmishes and fights once she gets portions of her best build options done. So once you have some core items made look to make plays in other parts of the map. Strategically hit your R when a fight breaks out, and make sure to target the enemy carries when Doom is stacked so that you can dash in doing massive damage and fearing the enemy champions.
- If not much is happening around the map you can stick to the side lanes. Vex is amazing at clearing the minion wave and you will be able to threaten tower damage if the enemy is not reacting to your push.
- You can also look to roam the map with your jungler. The CC Vex brings can help set up plays for her team. She has a decent Neutral Objective setup and her abilities will make it much harder for the enemy to contest the Drake or the Baron.
Late Game:
- Once Vex’s best build options are one she will be able to one-shot the enemy carries if she is allowed to get her combo off. However, positioning around fights will be equally important for her and correctly determining when she should be going in with her Shadow Surge.
- Vex is very squishy and you do not want to position too aggressively with her in the Late Game. She can be easily collapsed on and bursted down, so stick behind your frontline and go in only when the opportunity presents itself.
- If you are having a hard time surviving longer in teamfights, then look to make some defensive items on Vex. Zhonya’s Hourglass, Rod of Ages, and Seraph’s Embrace will help Vex have a much easier time navigating around fights.
