Microsoft’s stance on their AI assistant, Copilot, has stirred up fresh controversy over the use of the technology. Over the past few years, AI assistants have permeated various industries to the extent that they’re currently regarded as essential to business growth.
However, with the company stating that the assistant is intended for entertainment use only has raised a major question on the tech giant’s advertising and push behind their tool.
Microsoft Claims Copilot AI is Just For Entertainment
As reported by Tom’s Hardware, hidden within Copilot’s terms and conditions is a statement with claims that the LLM is to be used for entertainment purposes only. That has left many wondering about why Microsoft would want to aggressively push the product.
If you’re installing a copy of Windows 11, then Copilot comes along with it. And while you can use it to make various mundane tasks easy, or use it as a research tool, the company takes no liability for the mistakes that the technology may or may not make.

It’s not unnatural to see such a disclaimer, because corporates tend to do it all the time. However, with all these tech giants pushing for AI adoption and then sliding in such disclaimers does nothing but expose customers to potential problems while shrugging away their liability associated with it.
With the concerns around AI usage growing, there are individuals who are looking for alternatives where the technology isn’t available, or outright disabling it in programs like Microsoft Word. Others have also stated that they were looking for ways to outright delete it from their systems.
That said, while some businesses are rushing to become AI-friendly, others are laying off employees and cutting down entire AI departments. Such stark contrasts in the industry suggests that the belief in the technology might be waning sooner than one would expect.
Microsoft’s stance on Copilot further suggests that their legal liabilities might have finally caught up to them, and this might just be a legal loophole that the company has introduced, just to keep the lawsuits at bay.
