The much anticipated PlayStation 5 Pro finally made its reveal at Sony’s ‘PS5 Pro Technical Presentation’, on the official PlayStaion YouTube channel. The programme was hosted by none other than Mark Cerny – who is credited for designing both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
The 10 minute-odd presentation detailed the price, availability as well as enhanced features of the Pro model over the base PS5 and PS5 Slim variants.
PlayStation 5 Pro price
The Pro is available in both digital only and disc drive editions:
- Regular, Digital Edition: $699.99
- Digital Edition with optional disc drive add-on: $779.98
It should be noted that the disc drive attachment is optional and not a part of the retail bundle, costing $79.99 as a separate purchase. The drive is pretty much mandatory for those wishing to play their physical library of PS4 and PS5 games which will remain inaccessible otherwise.
A vertical stand is also available, but as a separate purchase.
PlayStation 5 Pro release date and availability
The PlayStation 5 Pro will be available worldwide starting from November 7, 2024. Pre-orders are expected to be made available soon, allowing players to reserve their consoles – in case of a repeat of the prior PS5 shortage. Further details are awaited.
All confirmed features and upgrades of the PlayStation 5 Pro
The PS5 Pro has been confirmed to come with the following major upgrades:
- A focus on both visual fidelity and performance, enabling players to never compromise on either 4k visuals or a smooth 60 frames per second output.
- A much larger GPU, which renders games up to 45% faster – thanks to a 67% increase in its Compute Units and 28% faster unified RAM.
- Enhanced ray tracing performance over the base PS5, allowing for superior visuals. The improvement is expected to be two or even three fold in some cases.
- AI-enhanced upscaling, custom built for the Pro. This has been nicknamed PSSR or the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution and works similar to DLSS upscaling.
The result is a much faster console which should offer the ‘definitive’ experience for playing PlayStation 5 exclusives.
