Why is EA laying off staff from one of its most successful games in recent years?

EA has come under fire for laying off staff from one of its most successful games in recent years. The Company has not had the best of track records with its consumers for decades now, but things were actually looking bright for a bit with the release of a new Battlefield.

Until they went and shot that down as well. According to a report from IGN, which reached out for a comment from an EA spokesperson, it stated that the company wants to specifically restructure Battlefield teams.

In turn, this led to a massive number of layoffs from Criterion, Dice, Ripple Effect, and Motive Studios, right after the same teams became responsible for making a well-selling game. The exact number of layoffs remains shrouded in mystery.

Battlefield 6 was one of EA’s most successful games in 2025

The previous Battlefield, which was 2042, didn’t really have the best of receptions, especially on launch. The game was riddled with bugs and other problems, which became a point of joke in the online circles, with several YouTube videos making fun of it.

In 2025, the atmosphere around the franchise was different, with a lot of fans expecting the developers to go back to what made the franchise amazing, and they actually did that. Battlefield 6 was released in that year after some successful beta tests.

It went on to become one of EA’s best-selling Battlefield titles in years, with almost seven million in sales in the first three days of it’s launch. It was also deemed the best-selling game of 2025 in the whole of the United States.

The franchise is not having an easy time

The franchise is not really going through the brightest of moments right now. Other than the layoffs, we just lost the head of Battlefield, Vince Zampella, a few months back in a tragic car accident. He was responsible for countless other amazing FPS titles in the industry.

Add to that, EA as a whole is starting to get swallowed up by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners after an investment of over $55 billion. The game itself has had a difficult phase retaining the initial player count, which it had on release.

Especially due to strict competition from other live service games such as Arc Raiders that recently released and has been topping charts. Although Steam is not the ideal signifier for a game’s success as a whole, it should be noted that the player count has gone below 100k.
