The First Descendant is finally out in Pre-season. If you are new to the looter shooter and wondering which one would be the best starter Descendant for you, you’re in the right place.
Starter Descendants don’t necessarily mean they would be weak. In fact, the ones TFD offers right at the start of the game are some of the best Descendants you can choose, out of all the characters available.
Their varied abilities and attributes make them versatile in wiping out enemies, especially when you are willing to squad up with your mates for Void Intercept Battles.
All starter Descendants
The three starter Descendant options are:
- Ajax
- Lepic
- Viessa
Below you can find a complete rundown of each of their abilities in detail.
Ajax

- Attribute: Non-Attribute
- Role: Tank
- Active Abilities: Orbit Barrier, Void Walk, Expulsion, Hypercube
- Passive Ability: Event Horizon
Ajax is the best Defensive Descendant, as it will protect the team as a Tank. He utilizes Void Energy and leads the team with an Orbit Barrier that can deflect and withstand a barrage of attacks easily, giving you enough time for quick healing and planning your attacks against multiple enemies, or even bosses.
The Orbit Barrier stays up for 10 seconds and is equivalent to Ajax’s Max HP x 160%. When an enemy hits the Barrier, it accumulates Void Energy equivalent to inflicted damage x 700%.
Lepic

- Attribute: Fire
- Role: DPS
- Active Abilities: Grenade, Overclock, Traction Grenade, Overkill
- Passive Ability: Close Call
Lepic is one of the Fire Descendants in the game. His Grenades can cause serious damage to enemies from a distance. It has a Burst DMG of Skill Power x 487.3% and a range of 5m radius.
His Overclock skill deals Continuous Burn Damage to enemies for 3 seconds at Skill Power x 115.2%. Overclock itself lasts for 17 seconds and increases Skill Power Modifier by 20%.
Viessa

- Attribute: Chill
- Role: Debuffer
- Active Abilities: Frost Shards, Frost Road, Cold Snap, Blizzard
- Passive Ability: Ice Sphere
Viessa is the only Descendant in the game having Ice abilities, a direct counter to Fire Attribute enemies and bosses.
Her Cold Snap skill is one of her signature abilities as it inflicts damage and Ice Shackle on enemies that come into contact with Chill. It can deal damage of whopping Skill Power x 1079.9% and lasts for 20 seconds.
Blizzard is one of her active skills and is equally powerful. Like Mei from Overwatch 2, Viessa’s ability creates a Blizzard with a 4m radius and enemies within it will take continuous damage.
Who is the best starter Descendant?
The best starter Descendant is Ajax. This character is strong and keeps things simple, especially for new players.
It has a great health bar which means it won’t die instantly after taking damage. Its Orbit Barrier can block incoming bullets and deflect them back to the enemy for additional damage. So, when things get tough during battles or multiple enemies start attacking, Ajax would be an ideal Descendant option for the team.
Lepic and Viessa are situational. They are good when conditions are in their favor but you can choose Ajax in almost every situation of the game.
The game’s launch is celebrated with many Twitch drops throughout July. Check our guide on all The First Descendant release day Twitch Drop rewards and how to claim them.
