Margit the Fell Omen is going to be your first major encounter in Elden Ring. Especially if you are going through a more linear approach to the open world exploration, you will be facing him even before you set foot in Liurnia or Caelid.
The boss guards the entrance to the Stormveil Castle legacy dungeon and you will only be able to explore the rest of the place and face Godrick the Grafted once you have beaten him.
But compared to Godrick, Margit is going to be a bit more challenging. Unlike the lord of Stormveils Castle, the Fell Omen is much faster and relentless with his barrage of attacks.
He is not as telegraphed and he will often mix delayed attacks into his combos catching you off guard. Margit, unsurprisingly, is th hardest boss that you will face in Elden Ring’s early game.
However, overcoming him will help you master some of the core combat mechanics in the RPG and net you a Talisman Pouch, and 12,000 Runes.
Note: This is not the last time you will be facing Margit in Elden Ring. You will encounter him again in the Capital Outskirts of Lyndell where he is posing as a commoner. He will have the same movesets and phases that he uses in Stormveil. But will drop the Viridan Amber Medallion +1 when defeated.

Margit is the first major boss that you will encounter as you explore Limgrave. If you are being a bit linear with exploration and looking to complete everything in the RPG‘s starting area before moving on to Liurnia or Caelid, then the Fell Omen will be your biggest hurdle.
He has two phases with the second one adding a few more moves and a spectral hammer to his combos. Margit is often relentless with his attacks and is not as predictable as some of the other main bosses.
But he is susceptible to parry and jump attacks. It’s relatively easier to break his poise and open him up with a critical hit (ripost) which will do massive damage.
Margit also has lower resistance to Bleed, and you will be able to proc this status effect on him rather quickly taking away a large chunk of his HP.
Where to find Margit the Fell Omen in Elden Ring

To get to Margit in FromSoftware‘s title, you will need to make your way up north from the Stormhill Shack. Follow the path till you reach a curve and then take the left which will curve back into the hill where the entrance to the castle will be filled with Godrick Soldiers.
Now you can either choose to kill all of them or use Torrent to run past them, through the gate, and activate the Castleward Tunnel Site of Grace. This Grace point is right infront of the Margit boss encounter.
Margit the Fell Omen phases and movesets in Elden Ring
As mentioned, Margit has two phases that he will employ when the encounter begins. The second phase will start once you chunk him down to 35% HP or below. At this stage, he will immediately bring out a spectral hammer, swing it, leap up, and slam it down on you.
He gets a few more tricks up his sleeve in Phase 2, however, the amount of damage that he takes in both phases remains the same. His weaknesses also do not change, and unlike some other “two-phase” Elden Ring bosses, he does not get a renewed HP bar.
Here are some of Margit’s movesets that you will encounter in Elden Ring:
Phase One

Staff Swing
- Move: This is Margit’s basic attack where he swings his staff and can be either fast or have a delayed animation.
- Couner: It has a short range and a small hitbox, so it’s not too difficult to dodge from.
Staff Stab
- Move: Th Fell Omen will use his staff to stab infront of him. He can often follow this up with a flurry of dagger slashes.
- Counter: It’s best to dodge to the right.
Wind up Slam or Spin
- Move: A wind up attack with his staff where Margit charges the attack animation and will either slam it down on the ground if you are near him or rush towards you and do a spin attack if you are away. The latter will slash two times.
- Counter: Dodge in either direction. You get a hit in after a successful dodge.
Spectral Dagger Slash
- Move: Margit will at times bring out a spectral dagger and do a quick slash attack with it. Doesn’t do much damage but it can catch you off guard, leading you open to his other attacks.
- Counter: You can avoid it by staying behind him and not getting too greedy with your combos.
Dagger Throw
- Move: If you are keeping your distance or trying to heal up with a flask, Margit will throw one or two daggers at you.
- Counter: It can be annoying to deal with so be aware of the attack animation and dodge to the sides.
Dagger stab retreat
- Move: Margit slashes with a dagger then jumps back and throws the dagger at you.
- Counter: This is a bit telegraphed and you can dodge twice to avoid it.
Tail Swipe
- Move: He has a tail swipe attack which will hit you if you are standing behind him.
- Counter: It has a small hitbox but can be effective at breaking your combos. So don’t get greedy and dodge.
Relentless Slash
- Move: If Margit successfully breaks your guard, he will flow it up by a flurry of slashes from both his staff and spectral sword.
- Counter: It’s unavoidable if your guard breaks, so try not to block each of his attacks.
Leaping Slam
- Move: This attack has a big animation windup. He will leap in the air stay there a while, and then slam his staff down doing large AoE damage.
- Counter: The animation gives you enough time to run away from the attack radius.
Phase Two

Hammer Swing
- Move: As soon as Phase 2 starts Margit will immediately swing his now conjured spectral hammer leap into the air and slam it down.
- Counter: This attack deals an incredible amount of damage so make sure you avoid both hits by dodging at the right time.
Left Leg Hammer Slam
- Move: Margit will raise his left leg and then after a slight delay bring the hammer crashing down.
- Counter: He can follow this up with a combo so dodge behind him.
Hammer Strike
- Move: Margit does a spin-slash attack where he leads with his staff and ends with the hammer. Can lead into more combos if he lands the hit.
- Counter: Dodge and prepare to keep dodging. You can parry the cane part of the attack
Hammer Leap
- Move: It’s one of his more dangerous hammer attacks which is not telegraphed and can happen at any time. He leaps into th air and brings the hammer down doing high AoE damage.
- Counter: Can on-shot you if you are hit. Make sure to dodge forward when he descends.
Weapon Combo
- Move: He makes the most of his staff, sword, and hammer during this attack.
- Counter: The hits come out in quick succession and the best counter will be to dodge back and wait for the combo to end.
Sword Swing
- Move: Swings his spectral sword and slices things infront of him.
- Counter: The best counter will be to just roll away.
Sword Spin
- Move: Another one of Margit’s extremely dangerous moves is the Sword Spin. Here he will do a continuous spin attack where he alternates between his sword and his staff.
- Counter: The move has a large range and you will want to run away from its hitbox as soon as he channels it.
Margit the Fell Omen resistances and weaknesses in Elden Ring
Resistances
Margit has the same resistance values to all status effects. The resistances are not that high, however, so you will be able to exploit Bleed, Poison Scarlet Rot, and Frostbite on him. But at this stage of the game, you will probably only have access to bleed weapons and maybe some Poison Darts. So feel free to use them if you are struggling.
The Fell Omen also has the same resistance values to all types of physical and magic attacks except Slash and Holy. He is weak to Slash but strong against Holy.
Margit is also immune to other status effects like Sleep and Madness in Elden Ring.
Weaknesses
Due to lower resistance values, you will be able to exploit the Bleed (hemorrhage) status effect on Margit. You will probably be able to proc. it two to three times in a fight if you have weapons with a faster attack animation.
Margit is also weak to Slash damage, hence weapons that do that type of physical damage will have a bit of an advantage.
The Fell Omen is weak to parry as well. He is one of the best teachers to help you learn that mechanic in Elden Ring, and you can try to parry him every now and then. However, do keep in mind that you will need to parry him two times to break his posture and open him up to a critical attack (ripost).
How to beat Margit the Fell Omen in Elden Ring
The Margit boss fight difficulty in Elden Ring will depend on a few things. The most important ones are how much you have leveled up by exploring Limgrave, and the type of build that you are going for.
Melee builds will struggle a lot more against him than players who are relying more on Incantations and Spells. However, there are a few universal strategies that you can use during the fight, to make th encounter considerably easier.
General tips for beating Margit
- You can make Margit’s Phase One much more manageable by purchasing Margit’s Shackles from Patches. He can be found in Murkwater Cave and the item costs 5,000 Runes. When used the shackles will bind Margit to the ground for some time allowing you to get some hits in. It can be used twice in Phase One. However, it will not work in Phase 2.
- Lone Wolf Ashes is great at distracting Margit’s attention. This will help you have good DPS uptime on the boss. Apart from the Lone Wolf, you can also use the Jellyfish Ashes for a similar effect.
- Feel free to summon other players if you are struggling. There is no shame in seeking aid from the community. You can also summon Sorcerer Rogier, he is the only NPC summon you get for Margit.
- Do not panic roll during his delayed attacks. Margit loves to switch up his combo speed, so dodge only when necessary. His attacks have good tracking and will catch you out with its hitbox if you are panic-rolling.
- Use Margit to master Elden Ring’s parry mechanic. If you have a full melee build, parry will be one of your best tools against him. This might take a few attempts but it’s not too hard to learn to parry his jabs and slashes.
Ranged build tips for Margit

Ranged players will have a much easier time taking out Margit. As the boss switches between an aggressive mode and a non-aggressive mode (with no in-between) you can wait it out till when he is a bit passive and start spamming your spells.
Abilities like Glintstone Pebble or Glintstone Stars are great at chipping away at his HP bar. However, these spells have a decent cast time which will lock you in the animation. This will make you vulnerable to Margit’s combos and heavier attacks.
Use the Lone Wolf Ashes to keep him distracted as you keep hitting him with your spells.
Bow players can struggle a bit but they can rely on Poison arrows and a hit-and-run strategy to take down Margit.
Melee build tips for Margit

Melee players will have a harder time against Margit in Elden Ring. His relentless barrage of weapon combos is very hard to avoid. He will make it incredibly challenging for you to keep your DPS up.
However, some good ways to deal with his is to exploit the Bleed status effect and look to break his posture as frequently as possible.
Make sure you have an Ash of War like the Bloody Slash equipped if your weapon doesn’t already cause Bleed build-up. Mix this with either parry or jump attacks to break his posture and leave him open to a ripost.
The Lone Wolf Ashe will be incredibly helpful for melee players as well. They will tank most of the damage and distract him, allowing you more time to get your hits in.
Never get greedy against Margit. He is not as forgiving as Godrick, and he can 100-to-0 you in a matter of seconds. Also avoid panic dodging and make sure to learn his movesets. Once you get familiar with his attack patterns you will know when to go in on the offensive and when to back away.
Once defeated, Margit will drop 12,000 Runes and a Talisman Pouch which will let you increase your Talisman slot by 1.
