Helldivers 2 is quite the success story for Sony’s foray into multi-platform releases, acquiring a sizable playerbase since its launch. This has further been bolstered by timely content updates and an engaging core gameplay loop that has kept players quite satisfied – until quite recently.
The Helldivers 2 PSN controversy has divided the community in two, with PC players furious over Sony’s decision to implement a mandatory PSN account requirement – barring which one cannot play the game. More on the situation below.
Sony makes Helldivers 2 PSN account mandatory, enraging PC players

The official Steam page of Helldivers 2 announced yesterday, May 3, that players will soon need to link a PlayStation Network ID to their existing installs in order to continue to be able to play the game. This change is expected to be enforced starting May 6 for new players – while existing players have until June 4 to comply.
The unnecessary nature of the PSN account linking has not sat well with the PC gaming community, with many lashing out at Sony for the move. Helldivers 2 was shortly hit with a barrage of negative reviews on Steam after the announcement which has tanked its rating to an all-time low of Mostly Negative.
It should be noted that the Steam page always mentioned that a Helldivers 2 PSN account would be required to access the game in the future. The move has also divided the playerbase into two camps – with one supporting the move and the other being adamantly against it.
PSN services are not available in all regions, and as such a certain section of Helldivers 2 players will be most likely locked out of the game for a while. While it can be argued that creating a dummy PSN account is rather straightforward, the step is indeed rather unnecessary.
Ultimately, the situation is unlikely to defuse anytime soon until Sony releases an official statement that either relaxes the requirement or removes it entirely.
