Hytale early access skipping Steam can be bad news, but developer assures otherwise, calls it the start of a “Long Journey”

An upcoming Sandbox game, Hytale, will soon be available for players to try. However, a sudden decision of developers, about its early access won’t launch on Steam has sparked a lot of concern in the gaming community. Developers, though, aren’t framing it like some retreat. As per them, it is a deliberate step for a better future of the game. As they have emphasized, they are committed to a community-driven and transparent process, even if it means taking a slow ride outside the largest PC gaming marketplace in the world.

Hytale dev explains the vision behind the upcoming early access’s Steam absence

Hytale early access skipping Steam can be bad news, but developer assures otherwise, calls it the start of a long journey

In the series of comment threads on X, Hypixel founder Simon Collins-Laflamme stepped up, directly addressing the decision of the game to skip Steam. He acknowledged the current state of the game, with honesty, saying, “everything is wrong with the game, literally why I’m not putting it up on steam.”

As per his argument, this move is the opposite of a cash grab. The developer even stated that, if maximized sales were the goal, they would be leveraging the hype machine of Steam immediately. Additionally, stating his philosophy, Collins-Laflamme said it out loud that he wishes the game to be in the hands of players and not investors.

It has also been stated that the studio is planning to launch an early access version of the game through their platform. It would come with some clear warnings on its unfinished nature. As Collins-Laflamme stressed, this early phase is all about putting the game out and using his belief in community to shape and to judge the worth of the project, during the “long journey.” It will allow them to work on improvements without the pressure of the public review system of Steam during the game’s roughest phase.

Hytale and its turbulent path take another shocking turn

The journey of Hytale to this point adds up some crucial context to the launch strategy. This game got cancelled by Riot Games in mid-2025. It led to Hypixel Studios’ shutdown. In the dramatic turnaround, Simon Collins-Laflamme, the founder, repurchased the game’s rights. He then reinstated development under his leadership. The revival also came with sober assessment—the project is janky and messy, with a lot of work still needed.

Considering the game’s turbulent history and admittedly early state of this build, the choice of avoiding Steam at launch seems a practical one. The aim of dev is to keep focus on core community feedback and the iterative improvement, without any distraction from the management of any storefront page prone to some early negative reviews.

Now, developers have not ruled out the release on Steam in future. They, however, are currently not seeing a necessity for it. Their focus initially is on stabilizing the game and its dedicated player base. It will mark the first steps within the long road of not just recovery but slow and steady completion; after all, the studio will be navigating early access on its terms, completely free of any immediate pressure from the external storefront metrics.
