Nintendo is now suing Trump’s Government due to tariffs that affected Switch 2 release

We are only a few months into the year, and Nintendo is already dialing up the drama by suing the US Government under the Trump administration. The company is always on the precipice of controversies with lawsuits that shutdown community driven efforts like fan games.

However, this time it’s different; Nintendo is taking things straight to the white house, and that has turned quite a lot of heads in the video game community. The original report comes from Aftermath, which states that the lawsuit was filed under the United States Court of International Trade.

Last year, the Trump administration had targeted imported goods to the US with some controversial tariffs. The Supreme Court had, however, intervened and shut down these, deeming it as ‘unlawful’ use of power.

Thousands of other companies have sued the US Government

Before these tariffs were taken down, in April of 2025, Donald Trump had revealed his administration’s plans with a physical chart that sought to impose them, declaring ‘liberation day’. Nintendo was severely affected by this, as it would stand in the way of their new Switch 2 hardware launch in June.

The company had to formally issue a statement delaying pre-orders for the hardware in April due to the ‘evolving market conditions, which is, for lack of a better word, directly blaming the tariffs. However, the official console launch stayed in place for June 5th, 2025.

It should be mentioned that Nintendo is not the sole company that has filed a lawsuit against the government seeking a refund on tariffs. According to recent reports, close to a thousand other business including multi-billion dollar companies like FedEX have also sued the US Government on similar grounds.

Social media reaction to the lawsuit

On social media, the tables have been seemingly turned, with people who are usually against Nintendo’s strictness now actually vouching for support of the multi-billion-dollar company to win the lawsuit.

Some users on social media are skeptical of the situation, knowing Nintendo’s emotionless attitude of strictly standing on business. Memes that criticize both sides in this lawsuit are popping up everywhere.

Nintendo is often joked about for having some of the most dangerous lawyers. The community has jokingly termed them as ‘Nintendo Ninjas’. The present situations have some users online confident that the Trump administration does not stand a chance against these so-called ‘ninjas’.

Supreme Court’s decision to shut down the tariffs has been criticized by the US president, Donald Trump himself, claiming that the move was extremely ‘anti-American.

Nintendo has so far successfully kept the prices of the Switch 2 hardware in check, relying on production in Vietnam. Although other accessories around the console have seen a significant price hike in recent times.
