Nintendo Switch 2 can soon see a price surge driven by global forces
The concern is not coming out of thin air. As per Niko Partners, a respected research firm’s stark prediction, Nintendo Switch 2 is likely going to see a global price hike in 2026. The reasons for it are multifaceted and completely outside of the direct control of Nintendo. Moreover, the significant price trade between the United States and China has also led to hefty tariffs on goods that are manufactured in the region, including the consoles. Even AI data centers’ booming demand is creating a worldwide squeeze on RAM and some other storage components, sending memory costs soaring high.
Nintendo so far has absorbed hits. Last year, when Switch 2 was launched, the company held the entry price at $499, despite competitors adjusting theirs upwards. However, that resilience seems to be reaching its limit now. In one of the recent interviews, Nintendo’s President Shuntaro Furukawa acknowledged the volatile memory market, which the company must monitor closely. While he did not comment on the price increase, his refusal to comment on hypotheticals left the door quite conspicuously open. Not to mention, the financial reality is just clear—sooner or later, all these external costs will have to be passed onto consumers.
Why does acting sooner and not later make sense for gamers?
Considering the uncertainty, to purchase Switch 2 now seems to be a strategic move for locking in on savings. The precedent that has been set by Microsoft and Sony has been quite telling. Both these companies ensured to raise prices on current-generation consoles in late 2025. They normalized the idea of mid-lifecycle cost increase for the hardware. Now, Nintendo too is facing similar inflationary pressures and might have a very little choice but to follow the suit, for protecting profit margins.
While some might argue that panic buying is just unnecessary, they would be right, but only to a certain point. As noted by President Furukawa, strong supplier contracts as well as existing inventory must prevent immediate price shock. Niko Partners have even suggested that Nintendo might implement the hike subtly, discontinuing the standard $449 model and ensuring they sell just the bundled version for $499 or even more.
