Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 is off to a great start, for both PC and console. The launch has had its fair share of issues though, with the ‘Controller not working’ error being one of the more prominent issues plaguing the game at the moment.
This issue affects PC players attempting to use a controller with the game, and has a few simple fixes that can be found detailed below.
How to fix the Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 “Controller not working” error
1) Disable Steam Input
- Boot into your PC and fire up the Steam client.
- Ensure that Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 isn’t running.
- Head to the ‘Library’ section of the Steam app.
- Navigate to the game, and click on the Game Properties (Cog Wheel/Settings icon on the right hand side of the game banner).
- Within the Settings Menu for the game, head to Controller > Override for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
- Select ‘Disable Steam Input’ from the drop-down menu.
Close the Settings tab and launch the game to play as usual.
2) Ensure that the controller isn’t disconnected from your PC
A disconnected controller may often result in the rather intrusive “Controller not working” error. Double check to ensure that there aren’t any loose cables. Additionally, check your Bluetooth settings if you are connected via a wireless solution instead.
It might be worthwhile trying to swap out and/or charge your controller’s batteries as well.
3) Wait for a fix
Unfortunately, if the above workarounds do not work out for you it might be best to wait for an official fix from the developers themselves.
It is hoped that an update will fix the issue, post launch.
What causes the Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 “Controller not working” error?
The root cause of the “Controller not working” error seems to be tied to misconfigured Steam Input settings. Switching off Steam Input entirely seemingly fixes the issue.
Additional causes may also be related to connectivity issues and a dead battery.
