How to appear offline in multiplayer games

Online activities can be both a blessing and a curse – especially with regards to modern day social media platforms, which track your every move – including the (sometimes embarrassing) games you play.

Whether it’s League of Legends or any other suspicious game you don’t want your friends or family knowing about, there thankfully exist a few ways to mask your online status.

This article will delve into a few of these methods. Keep in mind that some of these solutions use third party programs – which while unlikely, could result in grounds for suspension.

How to avoid appearing online in multiplayer games

Discord

  • Fire up Discord.
  • Click on the Settings/Cog icon next to your profile.
  • Scroll down to Activity Privacy.
  • Toggle ‘Share your detected activities with others’.
  • Toggle ‘Share your activity status by default when joining large servers’.

Alternatively, if you wish to hide your activity status for a particular game, head to Discord > Settings > Registered Games > Select the Program you wish to block > Hit the eye icon to disable it from being shown.

Steam

  • Log in to Steam.
  • Head to your game Library.
  • Scroll down to the game you wish to hide.
  • Right-click on the game, and select the Manage option.
  • Tab to the drop-down menu and select ‘Mark as Private’.

You should now have the game hidden from your Steam status.

Using third-party apps

Deceive

For this particular example, we will be using an app called Deceive. Do keep in mind that this is no replacement to muting or disabling chat entirely.

With that in mind, here are the steps to get it up and running:

  • Download Deceive from its Github page.
  • Make sure to download the latest version from the Releases section.
  • Before you run the program and hit Install, make sure League and/or Valorant are closed.
  • After installing, boot up League/Valorant.
  • You should now see an additional category in the Social section, named Deceive.
  • If Deceive is activated, a single user named Deceive Active! will be listed.

Next, simply log in as usual and play your games without appearing online. Deceive can be easily disabled by right-clicking on its icon in the taskbar tray.

Windows Defender may pop up a warning about the program, make sure to ignore it to get the program installed.
