Netizens across the globe were greeted with a rather peculiar surprise, when tech wizard Linus Sebastian’s official LTT Twitter/X account was shown to be privated this morning. This turned out to be the aftermath of a recent hostile takeover of the Linus Tech Tips (LTT) X account by a scammer.
For those unaware, the official LTT account was hacked approximately 6 hours before the time of writing this article, running what appeared to be a ‘special promotion’.
The special promotion in question referred to the sale of 10 Macbook Pros for $600 each, which was quite the bargain – especially when taking into consideration that these were to be individually signed by none other than Linus Sebastian himself.
Fans however, quickly decoded the true intent of the post, posting multiple warning messages on social media platforms such as Reddit – urging readers to not interact with the account for the time being.
Perhaps even more sinister was the nature of the post itself, which claimed to be sharing the entire amount collected to charity – which was a total lie.
Linus was quick to respond to the situation, confirming that the Linus Tech Tips account was indeed hacked by a third party, revoking his access in the process. He urged everyone to not respond to these giveaways, and that he would be contacting Twitter/X support for a resolution.
Linus, his fans and employees also expressed their frustration at the lack of support from X, calling out the company for its tiresome lack of security.
The official LTT X account has now been privated temporarily, with users being greeted to a ‘These posts are protected’ message when they try to access the account. Linus is yet to gain control of the account as of now however, with no ETA being provided.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that the Linus Tech Tips has been targeted by malicious actors, with multiple breaches being reported in the past year on its official YouTube channel.
