In the recent Dev Update, Riot Games went over all the ranked changes that they have in store for League of Legends in 2025 after Season 1 officially goes live. The MOBA has seen a shift to a three-split format in 2024, however, while that made the solo queue climb quite dynamic, the overall changes to progression were doing more harm than good.
The developers will be fine-tuning things in the upcoming season, and there will be a fair number of tweaks to how progression will work in 2025. Here are all the ranked changes hitting the Rift in the Noxus season.
League of Legends 2025 ranked changes
Here are the major ranked feature updates that are dropping in League of Legends with Season 1 in 2025:
1) You will only have one ranked reset in 2025
With this change, Riot is trying to directly address the issue that players are facing with ranked reset that happens every split. Dividing the splits in three has made progressing up the ladder too grind-heavy for many in the community. With every split climbing back to the rank you were in the previous one became more and more tedious and this just made players quit competitive matchmaking altogether.
In 2025, League of Legends will only have one big ranked reset without any additional reset after. Riot will also change how you will be able to earn the year’s Victorious skins.
From Season 1 onwards, you will only need to win 15 games of any type in ranked matchmaking to get your hands on a standard Victorious skin. However, to get the chroma versions you will need to reach higher ranks.
When talking about the Victorious Skins Riot states,
“We want to reward you for your time in Ranked in each Season, as well as make the base Victorious skin more achievable.”
Apart from this, they will also make the MMR reset less aggressive allowing higher-ranked players to have an easier time matching with players who are near their skill level.
2) Modified account decay rates
League of Legends will also modify the decay rates of accounts in 2025. Currently if you have been away from the game or competitive matches for over 6 months, your ranks would start to drop.
In 2025, Riot will be leaving this feature entirely allowing. Moreover, returning players would also enjoy a high 30% to a low 40% win rate when they come back to the game. With Season 1 these win rates will go up substantially for these Summoners and will be somewhere around 50%.
3) There will be no changes to ranked mode to tackle current ranked inflation
With changes to the ranked mode in recent years, Riot suggests that there has been a “moderate rank inflation”. Certain rankings have shown a fair number of skill-related differences between players of the same ranked tier but across different regions.
However, the devs believe that another major cause for this was the addition of the three-split format in 2024. So they will not be addressing this issue just yet, and will be something they tackle later down the line in 2025.
4) Riot will deploy solutions for boosted accounts
The three-split format has also given rise to the creation of a lot of alternative accounts. A lot of player profiles get boosted every season and it is something that Riot will be addressing in 2025.
While there are no concrete plans to do so at the moment, it will be interesting to see the solutions that the devs eventually come u with.
League of Legends 2025 ranked changes expected release window
While there has been no official statement on when the new ranked updates will be going live in League of Legends, many speculate that it will be on January 6, 2025, with patch 25.S1.1 (formerly patch 15.1). Before it officially ships the changes will first make their way to the LoL PBE on December 11, 2024.
