Video game mods get banned a lot of the time because they go too far. Most of the time, these are used for cheating. But almost all of them are a fun way to show people’s creativity or new ways to play some games. Unfortunately, sometimes harmless mods can also get banned.
In the list below, we will be taking a look at some of the video game mods that went too far and got banned.
Video Game Mods That Deserved Their Ban
Nude Mod (Street Fighter 6)

Street Fighter didn’t really have the best fifth game launch, and even though it became a good game later on, the damage was already done. However, things were different for the newest entry in the series, Street Fighter 6.
It got wild and raving reviews and quickly became one of the best entries in the series since Street Fighter 2 in the 90s. However, too much popularity leads to attracting the wrong crowd. So nude modders got a hold of the character models from this game.
While this isn’t anything new, and plenty of games have nude mods. This was a competitive game that was always played in public spaces. So it was just a matter of time before it became a problem.
An SF 6 tournament suddenly popped up in the news because of organizers forgetting to remove nude mods from their copy of the game. This sparked a debate and criticisms from a lot of people towards modding culture.
The Chun Li nude mod was something that went too far and deserved a ban. Capcom even took measures to stop people from modding their games for a while.
Hot Coffee Mod (Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)

Grand Theft Auto is not really a family-friendly series if you haven’t played it ever. Most of them follow characters from criminal backgrounds and various other paths of life, but mostly in the grey area. One thing is for certain, though: it is one of the most popular video game franchises in the history of gaming.
So, just like we mentioned previously, popular games are always picked up by modding scenes; the GTA franchise is no different. However, when the third entry in the 3D universe was released. There came a mod along with the PC release of the game that took things too far.
In the GTA San Andreas era, the hot coffee mod became really famous and took things a bit too far. A particular intimate scene between the main character and his girlfriend became accessible due to this mod. The hot coffee mod became a huge point of discussion in the game’s community.
Velvet- Strike (Counter-Strike)

Counter-Strike is not a game that needs any introductions. It is one of the most infamous and competitive first-person shooters that was ever created. Initially originating from a mod that Valve fans really liked, it got turned into a game that turned huge.
Being a Steam title, Valve is a company that is always forward about accepting fan creations. As such Counter Strike had its own modding community that did a lot of make the game fun. But there was one mod that used itself and the platform to promote political messages, and hence became a bit controversial.
The velbet-strike mod for Counter-Strike was created by Brody Condon, Anne-Marie Schleiner, and Joan Leandre. This mod was about speaking up against violent video games that went too far, and it was targeting Counter-Strike. It replaced the default spray in the game with anti-military messages.
This mod created a commotion in the community, with many players expressing their annoyance at the subject. While the message was relevant, many believed that protesting inside the video game is not the way.
School Shooter: North American Tour (Half-Life 2)

You might have already guessed from that title as to why this mod was banned. But before we dive into that, let’s talk a little bit about Half-Life 2, which is another Valve masterpiece. It is a sequel to the original Half-Life that reinvented storytelling in FPS games.
As we have already mentioned, Valve allows game communities to have their own workshop pages for modding. This was also the case for Half-Life 2, but things went too far when modders from Checkerboarded Studios started working on something that went too far.
The Shool Shooter: North American Tour mod was literally trying to do what it says in the title: emulate a school shooting in the video game. Thankfully, it caught everyone’s attention pretty early in development, so it was banned before it could even complete development.
GTA Vice City Revolution (Grand Theft Auto IV)

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is one of the greatest GTA games of all time. But it is a very dated game now, so it would be good to see a reimagined Vice City in a new game engine. Even though it got remastered, the gameplay does not really hold up when compared to the HD universe games in the franchise.
But thankfully, there was a team of modders who were willing to take up this task of realizing Vice City in a newer engine. Revolution Team had to make sure that the game doesn’t lose its charm, looking too old, either. So the game engine they chose was GTA IV, and they started building a mod that exactly replicated Vice City.
The results were astonishing as they were able to achieve most of the looks of the game down to a tee. But for Rockstar Games and their owners at Take Two, they thought that this went too far, so they tried to get it banned. Fortunately, the mod still went through development and got released, but it might get taken down again someday.
Broken Script Mod (Minecraft)

If there is any other franchise that has sold more copies in gaming history than GTA then it has to be Minecraft. Developed by Mojang Studios, this game took over the world and established the sandbox genre of online games that we know today.
A majority of the Minecraft community is filled with children or gamers from a young age. It got very popular among them because it is a game that provides a family-friendly experience. Unfortunately, not everything lasts. Minecraft has a thriving modding scene, and one of the mods went too far.
Broken Script is a mod of the game that had to be banned from several platforms because it was causing major issues in the game. Originally, the mod was created as a fun horror ARG experience, but it ended up corrupting the game worlds, shutting down players’ PCs.
Angrboda Fixed Mod (God of War Ragnarok)

Sony brought back the God of War IP in 2018 with a new game that took steps towards a fresh look at the Kratos mythos. It became huge and one of the biggest games PlayStation ever worked on, and single-handedly revitalized the franchise.
The game eventually got a sequel titled God of War Ragnarok, which was also released for PC. As we all know, this platform is the home of customizations and mods for games. So on the modding platform named NexusMods, a very controversial mod was dropped that took things too far.
A modder released a mod that whitewashes one of the characters in the game. The mod was politically motivated by a lot of support from extremists. According to them, this was the right thing to do since Norse mythology shouldn’t have people of color. The mod was thankfully banned and taken off the store.
