League of Legends best Thresh build guide: Itemization, Counters, Strategy, and more

Thresh has always been relevant in any League of Legends Support meta and much of it has to do with the playstyle versatility that his best build options offer. He is great at making plays, getting picks on carries, and even crowd-controlling multiple enemies.

Thresh is extremely ability-reliant and is one of the hardest Support champions to master in the game. He has a very high-skill ceiling and to be able to make the most of his kit you will need a fair bit of practice.

However, once mastered Thresh will be able to help you climb the ranked ladder. He has one of the best carry and outplay potential in League of Legends.

Thresh Pros and Cons in League of Legends Season 14

Pros:

  • Thresh has one of the most versatile playstyles out of all the Supports in Riot’s MOBA. He has good playmaking potential which can help his team get picks in a fight and enough CC in his kit to make things difficult for the enemy to re-engage. This allows him a fair bit of outplay potential that can help him carry in fights.
  • Thresh has amazing engage and disengage tools. This makes him very fun to play and provides him with multiple options to force a skirmish. His Dark Passage is great at helping his Jungler get kills while at the same time saving a teammate if they get collapsed on.
  • Thresh has a great Early Game. He has good kill pressure in the laning phase and can help secure early Gold and XP advantages for his Bot duo. He pairs extremely well with aggressive carries who can snowball the game once they get a few core items under their belt.

Cons:

  • Thresh is very ability-reliant. You are not going to have a good time with him if you are messing up his abilities and missing his hooks. He has very high cooldowns and it’s pretty easy to mess up an engage with him. Even with Thresh’s best build done, you will still not be able to spam his abilities at will.
  • Thresh has a very high skill ceiling. He is one of the hardest champions to master in League of Legends and you will need a lot of practice on him to get familiar with his kit. Much of your time will go into learning when you should be engaging onto the enemy team and when you should be disengaging from a fight.
  •  While Thresh has a great Early Game, he can fall off and get outscaled by Enchanter Supports. He also has no sustain and will not do well with an ADC who is weak early and takes a very long time to scale.

How to play Thresh: Tips and Tricks for League of Legends Season 14

Thresh gameplay guide

Early Game:

  • Thresh has a lot of kill presence in the laning phase and he can go all-in on the enemy Bot Lane as soon as he hits level 2. If you have an aggressive ADC who can follow up on your engage you will either get to secure a kill or force the enemy to blow their Summoners. This will push them into their tower making it difficult for them them to CS.
  •  Make sure you Ward around the lane to spot out the enemy Jungler. It’s very easy to push up with Thresh and you do not want to be caught out overextending. Avoid giving away free kills and stay relevant in Gold and XP. It will help Thresh and his ADC make their best build early.
  • Thresh’s Dark Passage is great at helping their Jungler close the distance and get a good gank off. You can hit a Death Sentence on the enemy Bot Lane and then throw out the Lantern. As you channel the second half of his Q, your Jungler can tap on the Lantern and immediately get pulled to the enemy champion who got hooked.

Mid Game:

  • Thresh has a lot of agency to make plays in the Mid Game. Your main goal will be to look for isolated targets to hook and roam the map with your Jungler to make plays in other lanes. You can even help your team set-up around the Neutral Objectives and use Thresh’s CC to make it harder for the enemy to contest.
  • Keep increasing your vision score. Place Wards around the pits and deep inside the enemy jungle. Vision is everything at this point in the game, and it will help your team dictate the pace of the match.
  • Be smart about your engages and disengages. Your number one priority will always be to hook the enemy backline. Once you grab a hold of a carry you will be able to through a lantern out to pull another teammate it. Use Thresh’s Flay and The Box as CC tools to make it difficult for the enemy to re-engage.

Late Game:

  • Depending on th match-up, Thresh might struggle in the Late Game. He does not do well against a poke comp and can be outscaled by enchanter supports. It can get difficult for him to get a pick especially if the enemy carries have built a lot of defensive items. So you will have to choose your engages very carefully.
  • Continue to place down Wards and destroy enemy wards with Sweepers. Keep increasing your vision score and help your team have knowledge of the enemy’s positioning. This will often let the sneak in a Baron or a Drake take even before the enemy has the time to react.
  • Once Thresh’s best build items are done he can get pretty tanky. You can use him as an effective frontline if you have enough items under your belt. So make sure you are peeling for the rest of your team during a skirmish or a Late Game teamfight.
