The old saying about brilliant fires dies quickly has taken on a painfully new meaning for New World: Aeternum’s community. Amazon Game Studios has decided to halt all future content updates for this MMO. It casts a shadow over the future of the game.
The move, emerging from the massive corporate layoffs, has left its dedicated player base to reflect on the journey that is filled with unfulfilled potential and immense promise. The servers, despite being expected to remain on for some time, fans will still see the dream of Aeternum growing, fading.
How did the gaming community react to Amazon backing off from New World Aeternum updates?
The announcement ignited a firestorm of reactions from players, all across X and some other social media platforms. The players are expressing a complex mix of grief and frustration. The voice of the community paints a vivid picture of this project, that captivated millions of players, but was ultimately not able to sustain the initial blaze.
“This MMO shattered records when it launched. Now Amazon is turning away from MMOs. No more updates. What went wrong?” questioned one of the X users, capturing the confusion of many loyal players.
The sentiment got echoed with a sorrowful observation from another player who commented, It was great at launch, but guess “brightest flames burn out the fastest.” Many hope, the server stay up for sometime at least.
However, not all viewed this launch optimistically. A critical fan offered a counterpoint, saying, “It wasn’t amazing at launch. The game had virtually zero end game at launch. The game needed 12-18 months more of dev time to add content and polish and it would’ve kept more of the original 900k+ player base it had.” The foundational issue got compounded by the feeling that the developers went out of touch with this genre.

Another user went ahead and bluntly expressed the sentiment, saying, “Whether or not it actually was one, it felt like an MMO made by people who’d never played an MMO.”
This news even sent ripples of concern through the other Amazon project followers. A commentator notably said, “LOTR MMO also confirmed dead, again. (along with New World).” “Pivoting to covering the RPG genre as a whole (RPG, ARPG, MMORPG) was the best career decision I ever made. It is a rough time to be an MMO player. Amazon plans to pivot to making smaller “ai games”,” the user added ahead.
The financial reality that is behind this decision, too, got laid bare as the analysis pointed out, “Amazon’s ambitious MMO reaches the end of service, and its servers are due to shut down in 2026 as their player base collapses and they fail to improve their finances. Despite still having 35k concurrent players, they can’t keep the MMO afloat due to exceedingly high operating costs.”
New World Aeternum players feel betrayed

For some observers, the timing of this decision was galling. Lamenting about the decision of Amazon, a player stated, “lol how crazy is it as soon as New World starts making an actual turn around and is seeing a surge in player count and good reviews, Amazon kills AGS and moonlights the game. MMOs as a genre are totally f****d.”
The feeling of betrayal was further expressed sharply by another player who fumed, “Atrociously out-of-touch management ruined an MMO that had potential to revolutionize the genre. Slowly but surely the team updates the game to a state where it’s moving in the right direction. Now they pull the plug to fund their shitty LOTR fanfic. Go bankrupt Amazon…”
Not just that, even the corporate strategy was viewed with complete cynicism. A user summarized perceived cycle of Amazon’s failure saying, “*releases game on pc* *game dead in less than a year* *decides to spend all their resources getting game ready for console to get more money* *fires everyone a year later and discontinues updates* Classic Amazon”
A user even went ahead and requested that Elon Musk purchase Amazon Game Studios. “Hey @elonmusk, you mind buying Amazon Game Studios? Maybe revive MMO New World? @playnewworld.” It showed how he considered him the last resort for reviving the MMO world.
Connecting the decision made by Amazon
As per reports, the plug was not pulled on the game in a vacuum. The decision is tethered directly to massive and company-wide restructuring happening. It hit gaming division with quite a force. Moreover, the move away from MMO development is being called a strategic retreat, signalxing a shift in the approach of the tech giant to the gaming market.
Reports have confirmed that Amazon is eliminating 14,000 jobs, with the game business absorbing a huge portion of the cuts. San Diego and Irvine-based development studios, the very heartbeats of the New World game and now-cancelled another MMO, Lord of the Rings, are gutted.
As an internal memo coming from the Vice President, Steve Boom stated that the company made a difficult decision to halt a significant part of their first-party AAA game development work, specifically around the MMO games.
The pivot is not just about the cost-cutting, but it is a fundamental redirection of the gaming ambitions of Amazon. The company is now stepping back from long-term and expensive commitment to building as well as maintaining the online world. They instead are trying to focus on shifting towards varied other types of projects.
The memo even highlighted their new direction. It includes some work around more casual and AI-focused games. It also talked about continuing partnerships for titles, including the new Tomb Raider.
The human cost after this corporate strategy is huge, with the entire teams dedicated to the New World reportedly being dissolved. Such layoff waves underscore harsh MMO genre economics, wherein the player base of 10s of 1000s could be deemed insufficient for justifying colossal operating costs. As for Amazon, the brightest flame of the AAA MMO ambition was distinguished by balance sheet’s cold reality and the new corporate mandate.
Did the developers try to address concerns of players?
While the developers didn’t address the concerns of the players, they did specifically, sent a farewell letter to players. As per a post by MMO Intel on X, “Players have found a secret goodbye message from the devs in New World’s Nighthaven area.” The post was with a screenshot of the message, which stated,
The TALES OF NIGHTHAVEN developers in the post said, “We were there when you found your first settlement, and explored its charm and denizens.” They further added, “we were there when you fought pirates, tigers, corrupted, ghosts, and all manner of hazards across the land. We were there when you set foot on forsaken sands filled with lost secrets and hidden dangers.”
The post continued saying, “We were there when you discovered the untamed wilds filled with beasts and verdant jungles. We were there when you crept into the dark heart of lands filled with opulence, madness, and terror.”
“Through it all we watched. We delighted. We reveled in your enjoyment of every perfect moment, every carefully crafted story, and we even bore witness to the joining of two souls who met here in Aeternum,” the post further added. Putting an end to the heartfelt farewell letter, the developers added, they did it all for their “dear adventurer,” putting an end to the heartfelt farewell letter.
