How to get and use Cores in Frostpunk 2

Cores are a rare resource that you will be able to come across in Frostpunk 2. They are primarily used to unlock advanced technologies in the game which can then help upgrade your city infrastructure.

This resource plays a key role in your city’s survival during extreme conditions, which is why you will need to be familiar with some of the best ways of acquiring them. Cores are not naturally occurring resources, these are relics of a pre-Frost era and are not something that can be manufactured.

Here is a guide on everything you need to know about acquiring and using Cores in Frost Punk 2.

How to farm Cores in Frostpunk 2

Core expeditions Frostpunk 2

The only way of obtaining Cores in Frostpunk 2 is to go on expeditions into the Frostland. However, to do this, you will need to unlock Explorations in Chapter 1 by building Logistics Districts.

Every Logistic District that you make will make teams for expeditions and for acquiring Cores you will need to explore areas that have a relatively higher threat level. To check the loot that a region provides, you can click on a node that is outside your city to view its details.

It will show you guaranteed drops as well as possible findings. As Cores are restricted to some of the riskiest areas in the Frostland, you will need a minimum of 20 (for Dangerous areas) and 25 (for Deadly areas) Frostland Teams.

Send your expedition teams out to the areas that drop Cores and they are likely to return with the handful of these resources.

Additionally, when you are completing the main story missions, you will often come across Core deposits. These are in colonies like Winterhome, however, they are available very late into progression. So make sure you are making the most of your expedition teams in the initial stages of your city development.

How to launch expeditions in Frostpunk 2

Expedition Frostpunk 2

To be able to launch an expedition in Frostpunk 2 you will need to make your way to New London and then press ALT. This will then highlight a compass-like icon towards the edge of your city. You will then need to Frostbreak over to them and then build a Logistics District.

This will enable exploration and you will then need to zoom out of your city to see the Frostlands that surround your city. Each region you put your cursor on will have a different difficulty level and resource drop.

There will be moments when the region will show that you do not have enough scouts to explore the place. You will need to improve your expedition level if that is the case. You can do that by expanding your Logistics District or building more of them where the compass points.

Additionally, to have an easier time exploring Dangerous areas you will either need to pass the Scout’s Law or build a Scouts Headquarters. This will make the zones relatively safer giving your Frostland Teams a better scope of exploring the areas.

Best Core locations in Frostpunk 2

As Cores are best obtained through exploring the Frostlands, here is a list of some of the best locations that you should be sending your exploration team out to in order to obtain the resource:

  • Mountains
  • Valleys
  • High Pass
  • Howling Shore
  • Frozen Ocean
  • Whispering Valley
  • Hills
  • Ridgeline
  • Plains
  • Highlands

At the beginning of your journey in Frostpunk 2, it’s best to send your expeditions to the Highlands and the Frozen Ocean. The plains are also likely to be relatively safer.

How to get cores back from buildings

Get Cores from buildings

You can break down specific buildings to obtain Cores by dismantling the structure. It will let you re-obtain the Cores that you have invested in that structure. If you have made something like a Deep Melting Drill or a Pressurized Coal Liquefactor then you can dismantle them to get all the Cores back.

Best ways to use Cores in Frostpunk 2

One of the best uses of Cores in Frostpunk 2 is to use it as one of the primary resources to upgrade the Generator in the Central District. It can also be used to construct specialized buildings which include the Pressurized Coal Liquefactor and the Deep Melting Drill.

Both these technologies will let you have a much easier time to survive longer in the game.
